OVERVIEW

Premium Surface Finishing with Walter Crimped Wire Cup Brushes

The Walter 13D524 is a high-performance 5-inch crimped wire cup brush designed to deliver superior surface cleaning results in industrial environments. Engineered by Walter Surface Technologies, this tool addresses the common challenges faced by metalworkers when using wire abrasives: safety, longevity, and consistent performance. The defining feature of this model is its integrated safety supporting ring. In standard wire brushes, centrifugal force often causes wires to splay outwards (flare) prematurely, reducing the aggressiveness of the brush and leading to wire fatigue. The Walter supporting ring constrains the wires, maintaining a tight, dense brush face that acts more effectively against contaminants.

As the brush is used and the wire tips wear down, the operator can easily remove the supporting ring. This action reveals a fresh length of wire that was previously protected, effectively regenerating the brush for a second cycle of life. This design not only maximizes the utility of the abrasive material but also ensures that the brush maintains a consistent cutting action throughout its lifespan. The crimped wire configuration is specifically chosen for applications requiring flexibility. Unlike twisted knot brushes which provide high-impact energy for heavy slag, crimped wires offer a cushioning effect, allowing the brush to conform to irregular surfaces, contours, and edges without gouging the base material.

This brush is constructed with premium oil-hardened and tempered steel wire, ensuring that each filament retains its stiffness and resistance to breakage under load. It is balanced to strict tolerances to minimize vibration, which protects the angle grinder's bearings and reduces operator fatigue during extended use. The 5/8"-11 threaded arbor ensures a secure and quick attachment to standard angle grinders. Whether used for maintenance, repair, or fabrication, the Walter 13D524 offers a cost-effective solution for surface preparation tasks.

Technical Benefits

  • Controlled Flaring: The ring keeps wires aligned for maximum impact.
  • Extended Lifespan: Removable ring exposes new wire, reducing replacement frequency.
  • Vibration Control: Precision balancing ensures smooth operation.

FAQ

The safety supporting ring prevents the wires from flaring out too early due to centrifugal force. This keeps the brush aggressive and safe. Once the wires wear down to the ring, you can remove the ring to expose fresh wire, extending the brush's life.

This cup brush has a standard 5/8"-11 threaded arbor, which fits most standard 4.5-inch, 5-inch, and larger angle grinders sold in North America.

This specific model is designed for carbon steel. Using it on stainless steel may cause contamination (rust) on the stainless surface. For stainless steel, look for a brush with stainless steel wires.

Crimped wire is flexible and ideal for light to medium cleaning, paint removal, and irregular surfaces. Knot wire is twisted for higher impact and is better for heavy-duty cleaning like removing thick slag or heavy scale.

Once the wires have worn down flush with the ring, the ring can typically be knocked off or pried off using a tool, exposing the remaining length of wire for continued use.

This is a 5-inch diameter cup brush.

While it can remove light slag, a twisted knot wheel is generally recommended for heavy slag removal as it is more aggressive. This crimped brush is better for rust, paint, and general surface cleaning.

Always check the stamped RPM on the actual product. Generally, 5-inch cup brushes are rated for speeds compatible with standard angle grinders, but you must ensure your grinder's RPM does not exceed the brush's rating.
