OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of the ESAB Oxweld 1567-3/4 Gouging Nozzle

The ESAB Oxweld 1567-3/4 Gouging Nozzle is a specialized oxy-fuel consumable engineered for the controlled removal of base metal and weld metal. Unlike standard cutting tips which are designed to sever material with a high-velocity oxygen jet, this gouging nozzle is calibrated to deliver a lower velocity, higher volume oxygen stream. This fluid dynamic profile allows the operator to "wash" molten metal out of the groove rather than piercing through the workpiece. The nozzle is specifically optimized for use with alternate fuel gases, namely Propane and Natural Gas, which require different mixing and preheat characteristics compared to Acetylene.

The 1567 series features a two-piece construction, consisting of a brass internal member with precision-machined splines and a heavy-duty copper outer shell. This design is critical for alternate fuels; the skirted outer shell creates a recess that acts as a combustion chamber, anchoring the flame and intensifying the preheat energy before it interacts with the steel. This ensures that the ignition temperature is reached rapidly, compensating for the lower flame propagation speed of propane. The internal splines are designed to ensure uniform gas distribution, resulting in a stable, concentric flame that provides consistent gouging performance across the length of the cut.

Maintenance and longevity are key aspects of the 1567-3/4 design. The two-piece assembly allows for disassembly, enabling the operator to clean the internal seating surfaces and splines of any carbon deposits or slag blowback that may occur during aggressive gouging operations. The nozzle is manufactured to tight tolerances to ensure a leak-proof seal when seated in compatible Oxweld torch heads, such as the C-32, C-66, and C-77 series. This precise fitment prevents gas starvation and backfires, ensuring safe operation in heavy industrial environments.

FAQ

This nozzle is designed specifically for use with Propane and Natural Gas. It is not suitable for Acetylene.

It fits standard Oxweld hand cutting torches, including the C-32, C-66, and C-77 series.

This is a gouging nozzle, designed to wash away metal to form a groove rather than cut through the material.

Since it is a two-piece nozzle, you can separate the outer shell from the inner member and wipe the splines clean. Avoid using standard tip drills on the splines.

The '3/4' typically designates the nozzle size, relating to the approximate width of the groove or the oxygen orifice capacity for that specific series.

Two-piece nozzles create a recess that anchors the flame, providing the necessary stability and preheat intensity required for slower-burning alternate fuels.

While it can pierce, it is optimized for angled gouging. Piercing with a gouging tip can cause excessive slag blowback.
