OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of the GR-9994 Automatic Changeover Regulator

The GR-9994 is a high-efficiency, compact two-stage regulator designed specifically for LP (Liquid Propane) gas systems requiring continuous fuel supply. Engineered for reliability in dual-cylinder setups, this unit integrates an automatic changeover mechanism that seamlessly transitions the gas draw from a depleted 'service' cylinder to a full 'reserve' cylinder. This functionality is critical in applications such as heating, refrigeration, and critical appliance operation where fuel interruption could lead to system failure or inconvenience.

Technically, the regulator operates by reducing high-pressure tank gas in two distinct stages. The first stage reduces the variable tank pressure to a consistent intermediate pressure, while the second stage reduces it further to the standard utilization pressure of 11 inches of Water Column (W.C.). This two-stage architecture is superior to single-stage alternatives as it maintains a steady flow rate and outlet pressure even as the tank pressure drops due to depletion or low ambient temperatures. The unit features a visual indicator dome that displays green when the service cylinder is supplying gas and flips to red when that cylinder is empty and the unit has switched to the reserve.

Constructed with a durable zinc die-cast body and internal components resistant to LP gas impurities, the GR-9994 is built for longevity. It includes standard 1/4-inch inverted flare inlets for pigtail connections and a 3/8-inch F-NPT outlet for the main supply line. With a capacity rating suitable for most RVs, cabins, and portable setups (typically around 345,000 BTU/hr), it ensures that peak demand loads are met without pressure sag.

FAQ

The regulator is connected to two tanks. You select one as the 'supply' tank using the lever. When that tank empties, the pressure difference causes the internal valve to automatically switch to drawing from the 'reserve' tank, ensuring continuous flow.

When the indicator turns red, it means the primary 'supply' cylinder is empty and the regulator has automatically switched to drawing gas from the reserve cylinder. It is time to refill the empty tank.

Yes. Once the indicator shows red, you should flip the supply lever to point towards the reserve tank (which is now powering the system). You can then safely disconnect and refill the empty tank without interrupting gas flow.

The GR-9994 is factory set to a standard low-pressure output of 11 inches Water Column (W.C.), which is the standard for most RV and residential propane appliances.

The regulator features two 1/4" Inverted Flare inlets (for connecting pigtail hoses from the tanks) and one 3/8" Female NPT outlet for the main gas line.

A 2-stage regulator reduces pressure in two steps, which results in a much more constant delivery pressure to your appliances, regardless of changes in tank pressure or outside temperature.

With a capacity of approximately 345,000 BTU/hr, it is suitable for most standard RVs and trailers. However, for very large commercial setups, you should verify your total BTU load requirements.
