OVERVIEW

Heavy-Duty Gouging with Alternative Fuels

The ESAB 998274 is a premium 1568 Series Gouging Nozzle (Size #19) engineered for industrial metal removal applications. Designed specifically for use with alternative fuel gases such as Propane and Natural Gas, this nozzle allows fabrication shops and maintenance teams to perform heavy-duty gouging without the expense of acetylene. The 1568 Series is renowned for its durability and performance in harsh environments, making it a staple in shipyards, structural steel plants, and heavy equipment repair facilities.

Gouging is a critical process for removing old welds, preparing plate edges for welding (U-grooves), and washing away rivets or bolts. The ESAB 998274 excels in these tasks by producing a low-velocity, high-volume oxygen stream that washes molten metal away smoothly rather than severing it like a cutting tip. This results in a clean, symmetrical groove that often requires minimal secondary grinding before re-welding.

Two-Piece Efficiency

This nozzle features a two-piece construction, consisting of a brass inner member with splines and a copper outer sleeve. This design is essential for burning alternative fuels efficiently. The splined inner piece creates turbulence in the preheat gas mixture, ensuring a stable, high-temperature flame even with slower-burning gases like propane. Furthermore, the two-piece design allows the operator to separate the components for thorough cleaning, extending the service life of the consumable.

Key Applications

  • Weld Removal: Efficiently gouge out defective welds or cracks for repair.
  • Edge Preparation: Create consistent U-grooves on thick plates for full-penetration welding.
  • Casting Repair: Remove fins, risers, and defects from cast iron or steel parts.

Equip your Oxweld-style torches with the ESAB 998274 to leverage the cost benefits of fuel gas while maintaining professional-grade gouging performance.

FAQ

This nozzle is designed for alternative fuel gases such as Propane and Natural Gas. It is not suitable for Acetylene.

A cutting tip is designed to pierce and sever metal with a high-velocity stream. A gouging nozzle, like the 998274, uses a lower-velocity, higher-volume oxygen stream to wash molten metal away, creating a groove rather than a cut.

The ESAB 998274 is a two-piece nozzle, consisting of a brass inner part and a copper outer sleeve, which is standard for propane/natural gas efficiency.

The 1568 Series fits Oxweld-style torches, including the C-32, C-66, and C-77 hand and machine torches.

Since it is a two-piece design, you can separate the outer sleeve from the inner member to clean the splines and remove slag. Be careful not to damage the seating surfaces.

The size #19 refers to the orifice diameter or capacity of the nozzle. A #19 is a larger size intended for removing significant amounts of material in a single pass.

While it produces a flame, it is specifically designed for gouging (metal removal). For pure heating applications, a dedicated heating tip (rosebud) is more efficient.

Propane is generally much cheaper than Acetylene and is safer to handle. While the preheat time is slightly longer, the total heat output is sufficient for continuous gouging operations.
