The Smith Gas Axe™ SC949 is an extra-heavy-duty straight cutting torch engineered specifically for the rigorous demands of foundry work, scrap yards, and large-scale demolition. With a total length of 48 inches (1219 mm) and a 90-degree head angle, this tool provides the necessary reach and thermal distance for operators working on thick sections of steel. The torch is designed with a high-capacity flow system capable of severing material up to 24 inches (610 mm) thick when using acetylene, and up to 20 inches (508 mm) with propane or natural gas, making it one of the most capable hand torches in its class.

Metallurgy and Construction

At the core of the SC949's durability is its thick-walled Manganese Bronze head. Unlike standard brass heads, this material offers superior resistance to heat warping and mechanical damage, ensuring the seating surfaces remain true even after prolonged exposure to reflected heat. The torch utilizes a three-tube construction method, featuring heavy-wall stainless steel tubes that physically separate the fuel gas and oxygen supplies until they reach the mixing chamber within the tip. This "in-tip" mix design significantly reduces the risk of flashback into the handle and eliminates mixing tube burnout, a common failure point in tube-mix torches.

Operational Features

The SC949 incorporates Smith’s proprietary "Ease-On" cutting oxygen valve. This mechanism allows for the gradual application of cutting oxygen, providing a laminar flow that is critical for piercing thick plate without causing excessive slag blow-back or key-holing. The torch is compatible with Smith SC Series cutting tips, which feature Graf-Tite® soft seats. These resilient seats form a positive gas-tight seal with only hand tightening, eliminating the need for wrenches during tip changes and protecting the head's seating surfaces from nicks and wear. The cutting lever is reversible, allowing for top or bottom mounting to suit operator ergonomics, and the handle features a raised rib design for a secure grip with heavy gloves.
