OVERVIEW

Extreme Duty Industrial Cutting Torch

The Smith Gas Axe™ SC929 is an extra heavy-duty straight cutting torch engineered for the most demanding industrial environments, including scrap yards, demolition sites, and foundries. Designed to withstand severe heat and physical abuse, this 21-inch torch features a 90-degree head constructed from thick-wall manganese bronze. This premium material choice significantly reduces the risk of heat warping and damage compared to standard brass heads, ensuring consistent performance even during prolonged high-heat applications.

Safety and efficiency are paramount in the SC929's design. It utilizes a three-tube construction method that keeps fuel gas and oxygen separated until they reach the tip. This "in-tip" mixing design minimizes the volume of mixed gas within the torch, greatly reducing the risk of flashback and enhancing operator safety. The torch is capable of cutting steel up to 24 inches (610 mm) thick when using acetylene, and up to 20 inches (508 mm) with propane or natural gas, making it one of the most capable hand torches in its class.

Operational versatility is provided by the reversible cutting lever, which can be mounted on either the top or bottom of the handle to suit operator preference or specific job access requirements. The torch utilizes Smith's SC Series slip-in cutting tips, which feature resilient Graf-Tite® seat material. These soft seats protect the tip seating areas from nicks and allow for hand-tightening, eliminating the need for wrenches during tip changes. Additionally, the "Ease-On" cutting oxygen valve allows for exceptionally smooth application of cutting oxygen, reducing key-holing and slag blow-back during piercing operations.

The SC929 is compatible with all standard fuel gases, including acetylene, propane, propylene, and natural gas, offering flexibility for facilities with varying fuel sources. The ergonomic, raised-rib brass handle ensures a positive grip and reduces fatigue, while stainless steel ball-style valves provide precise flame adjustment and positive shut-off.

FAQ

The Smith SC929 Gas Axe™ can cut up to 24 inches (610 mm) of steel when using acetylene and up to 20 inches (508 mm) when using propane or natural gas.

No, the SC929 uses Smith's slip-in cutting tips with Graf-Tite® soft seats, which allow for hand-tightening and do not require a wrench.

Yes, the cutting lever on the SC929 is reversible and can be mounted on either the top or the bottom of the handle to suit operator preference.

This torch is compatible with all common fuel gases, including acetylene, propane, propylene, and natural gas, provided the correct SC Series tip is used.

The thick-wall manganese bronze head is extremely durable and resistant to heat warping, making it ideal for the high-heat conditions found in scrap and demolition cutting.

The SC929 uses Smith SC Series cutting tips.

Three-tube construction keeps the oxygen and fuel gas separated until they reach the tip (in-tip mixing). This prevents mixing tube burnout and enhances safety by keeping the mixed gas volume low.

The torch itself typically does not include flashback arrestors in the box unless specified as a kit; however, it is designed with in-tip mixing which adds resistance to flashback. External arrestors are recommended for complete safety.
