The Smith Gas Axe™ SC945 is a premier industrial cutting tool designed for the most demanding scrap, demolition, and salvage operations. Engineered by Smith Equipment (a Miller Electric brand), this 48-inch straight cutting torch features a 75-degree head angle, optimizing operator ergonomics for ground-level work and difficult-to-reach structural cuts. The torch is distinguished by its massive cutting potential, capable of severing steel up to 24 inches (610 mm) thick when using acetylene, and up to 20 inches (508 mm) with propane or natural gas. This versatility makes it a universal solution for facilities utilizing various fuel gases, including propylene-based fuels.

Superior Construction and Safety

At the core of the SC945's durability is its manganese bronze head. Unlike standard brass heads, manganese bronze offers exceptional resistance to heat warping and physical damage, a critical feature for severe duty cycles where reflected heat is intense. The torch utilizes a three-tube construction design, which physically separates the oxygen and fuel gases within the handle and tubes. This separation eliminates the possibility of mixing tube burnout—a common failure point in injector-style torches—and enhances operator safety by preventing flashback from traveling up the torch body. The tubes themselves are heavy-wall stainless steel, providing high gas flow rates and structural rigidity.

Operational Efficiency

The SC945 is designed to minimize downtime through its proprietary Slip-In Cutting Tip system. These tips utilize resilient Graf-Tite seat material that protects the seating surfaces from nicks and ensures a positive gas seal without the need for high-torque wrench tightening. Operators can change tips by hand, reducing changeover time significantly. The torch also features an "Ease-On" cutting oxygen valve, which allows for the gradual application of cutting oxygen. This precise control reduces key-holing at the start of a cut and minimizes slag blow-back, protecting both the operator and the equipment. The cutting lever is reversible, allowing for top or bottom mounting to accommodate different grip styles and working positions.
