OVERVIEW

Precision Engineered for Heavy-Duty Industrial Cutting

The Smith HBS-H510S Heavy Duty Hand Cutting Torch Outfit represents the pinnacle of oxy-acetylene cutting technology, designed for professionals who demand reliability and precision. At the core of this system is the SC229 straight cutting torch, a heavy-duty instrument engineered with a three-tube construction. This design is critical for safety and longevity; by keeping the oxygen and fuel gas separate until they reach the mixing chamber within the tip, the risk of flashback is minimized, and mixing tube burnout is eliminated. The torch features a nickel-plated bonnet and a forged brass body, ensuring resistance to corrosion and wear in harsh industrial atmospheres.

The outfit is equipped with Smith's renowned 40 Series regulators, which are designed to maintain stable delivery pressures even under fluctuating cylinder conditions. These regulators feature a stainless steel diaphragm that resists corrosion and freezing, extending service life significantly compared to standard neoprene diaphragms. The internal high-pressure seat is protected by a dual-filter system, preventing debris from compromising the seal. A key technical advantage of this kit is the Graf-Tite soft seat technology found in the SC12 series tips. This compressible material protects the tip seating area from nicks and deformation, ensuring a gas-tight seal that persists through hundreds of tip changes.

Operational efficiency is enhanced by the "Ease-on" cutting oxygen valve, which allows the operator to feather the oxygen flow. This precise control reduces slag blowback when piercing thick plates and ensures cleaner starts. The slip-in tip design further streamlines operations; once the tip nut is tightened with a wrench, subsequent tip changes can often be secured by hand, reducing downtime. This specific configuration (HBS-H510S) comes with CGA 510 acetylene connections, suitable for standard industrial acetylene cylinders with female valves.

FAQ

The outfit is capable of cutting steel up to 12 inches (305 mm) thick when equipped with optional heavy-duty tips. With the supplied SC12-2 tip, it can cut up to 1-1/4 inches.

This kit features a CGA 510 acetylene connection. This is designed for acetylene tanks with a female valve thread (often referred to as POL).

The Hard Hat gauge guards are installed on the regulators but can be removed if necessary, although it is highly recommended to keep them on for protection.

The SC229 torch uses an in-tip mix design. The mixing of oxygen and fuel gas occurs inside the tip itself, rather than in the torch head or handle, which improves safety and flashback resistance.

The SC229 torch can be used with propane if you change the cutting tip to a propane-specific tip (SC50 Series) and ensure you are using a propane-rated regulator and T-grade hose. However, the included regulator and tip are optimized for acetylene.

The SC229 cutting torch is covered by a 5-year limited warranty, while the 40 Series regulators are covered by a 3-year limited warranty.

Graf-Tite soft seats are made of a resilient material that compresses to form a gas-tight seal. This prevents damage to the torch head seating surface and allows the tip to seal perfectly even if there are minor imperfections, extending the life of both the tip and the torch.

For the first installation of a new tip, a wrench is required to seat the Graf-Tite material. For subsequent changes of that same tip, hand-tightening is usually sufficient to secure it.
