OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of the Smith HBS-H300S

The Smith HBS-H300S is a premium heavy-duty oxy-acetylene cutting outfit designed for industrial fabrication, scrap, and demolition applications requiring high-capacity throughput and extreme durability. At the core of this system is the SC229 Straight Cutting Torch, a three-tube design that maintains gas separation until the mixing chamber within the tip itself. This in-tip mix technology significantly reduces the risk of flashback compared to tube-mix or head-mix designs. The torch features a nickel-plated brass body and head for corrosion resistance and heat reflection, while the internal stainless steel tubes provide structural rigidity and fluid isolation.

The outfit is equipped with Series 40 heavy-duty regulators (40-175-540S for Oxygen and 40-15-300S for Acetylene). These regulators are engineered with stainless steel diaphragms, which offer superior service life and sensitivity compared to neoprene alternatives, particularly in varying temperature conditions. The regulators are protected by HB190 "Hard Hat" gauge guards, manufactured from heavy-gauge steel to prevent damage to the 2.5-inch polished brass gauges and shatter-resistant polycarbonate lenses. The acetylene regulator in this kit features a CGA 300 inlet connection, suitable for commercial acetylene cylinders with male valve threads.

Operational efficiency is enhanced by the Graf-Tite® soft seat cutting tips. Unlike metal-to-metal seals that require high torque and are prone to scarring, the Graf-Tite material compresses to form a leak-proof seal with hand-tightening only. The SC229 torch also incorporates an "Ease-On" cutting oxygen valve, which allows the operator to feather the oxygen stream, reducing slag blowback during piercing operations and ensuring cleaner starts. The system includes an SC12-2 tip capable of cutting 1-1/4 inch steel, with the torch body rated for cuts up to 12 inches using optional larger tips.

FAQ

The included SC12-2 tip cuts up to 1-1/4 inches. However, the SC229 torch is capable of cutting up to 12 inches of steel with optional larger SC12 series tips.

No, the HBS-H300S outfit includes the torch, regulators, gauge guards, and a cutting tip. Hoses must be purchased separately.

This outfit comes with a CGA 300 acetylene regulator. This fits commercial acetylene cylinders which typically have a male thread on the valve. It will NOT fit 'B' or 'MC' small tanks, nor will it fit POL (CGA 510) valves without an adapter.

No, the SC229 is a dedicated straight cutting torch. It does not accept welding nozzles. For welding capability, you would need a combination torch handle and cutting attachment.

No. The Smith SC12 tips feature a slip-in design with Graf-Tite soft seats that seal with hand-tightening, eliminating the need for a wrench.

The Series 40 regulators included in this outfit are covered by a 3-year limited warranty.

Yes, the SC229 torch features a reversible cutting lever, allowing you to mount it on the top or bottom of the handle based on your preference.

The Series 40 regulators feature a stainless steel diaphragm, encapsulated seat, and large 2.5-inch brass gauges, designed to withstand higher pressures and rougher handling than standard medium-duty regulators.
