OVERVIEW

Premium Heavy-Duty Acetylene Cutting Performance

The Smith SC12-3 Acetylene Cutting Tip is a high-performance consumable designed for professional fabricators and industrial environments. Engineered by Smith Equipment (now under the Miller Electric umbrella), this Size 3 tip is part of the renowned SC12 Series, known for its durability and precision in heavy-duty applications. Capable of cutting steel thicknesses up to 2 inches (51 mm), it is an essential component for structural steel work, demolition, and general fabrication where acetylene is the fuel gas of choice.

Advanced Safety and Design

One of the standout features of the SC12-3 is its In-Tip Gas Mixing technology. Unlike standard torches that mix gases in the handle or tube, this tip mixes oxygen and acetylene within the tip itself. This design adds a critical layer of safety by isolating the mixed gas volume to the tip, significantly reducing the risk of flashback and protecting both the operator and the torch equipment. The tip also features a concave end which helps protect the orifice from damage if the torch is accidentally tapped against the work surface, further resisting flameout and backfire.

Precision Construction

Manufactured from high-quality copper, the SC12-3 utilizes a fully swaged manufacturing process. This results in mirror-smooth internal gas passages that minimize turbulence. The result is a stable, laminar preheat flame and a cutting stream that starts fast and leaves minimal slag. The slip-in design features a recessed, heat-resistant seat that allows for hand-tightening, ensuring a perfect seal without the need for wrenches that can damage the torch head. This tip is compatible with all Smith SC and DG series hand torches, as well as SC770 and SC772A machine torches.

FAQ

The Smith SC12-3 tip is designed to cut metal thicknesses ranging from approximately 1-1/2 inches to 2 inches (51 mm).

This tip is designed exclusively for use with Acetylene gas. Using other fuel gases with this tip can be dangerous and ineffective.

It is compatible with Smith DG200 and SC200 series cutting attachments, all SC and DG series hand torches, and Smith machine torches like the SC770.

No, the Smith SC12 series features a slip-in design that is intended to be hand-tightened to form a positive seal. Do not use a wrench.

In-tip mixing combines the preheat oxygen and fuel gas inside the tip rather than the torch handle. This improves safety by minimizing the volume of mixed gas, thereby adding resistance to flashback.

Because of the swaged design, it is often recommended to clean from the back of the tip when possible, or use a specialized tip cleaner designed for the orifice size to avoid damaging the smooth internal passages.

For optimal performance, the recommended flow rates are approximately 170-180 SCFH for cutting oxygen, 14 SCFH for preheat oxygen, and 12 SCFH for acetylene.

The SC12-3 is a one-piece acetylene cutting tip. Two-piece tips are generally used for alternate fuels like propane or propylene.
