The Smith SC14-3 is a specialized heavy-duty cutting tip engineered specifically for the removal of mechanical fasteners, such as rivets and bolts, as well as for cutting risers and bulkheads in industrial environments. Part of the SC14 series, this tip is designed to operate exclusively with acetylene gas and is compatible with Smith's extensive line of heavy-duty cutting equipment, including the DG200 and SC200 series attachments, as well as all SC and DG series hand and machine torches.

In-Tip Gas Mixing Technology
A defining feature of Smith's heavy-duty tips is the "In-Tip" mixing technology. Unlike standard torches that mix gases in the handle or head, the SC14-3 combines the preheat oxygen and acetylene fuel gas inside the tip itself. This design significantly enhances safety by reducing the volume of mixed gas present in the system, thereby lowering the potential energy of a flashback. It also ensures the optimal stoichiometric ratio for a high-temperature, efficient flame.

Optimized Geometry for Washing and Cutting
The SC14-3 features a concave-shaped tip end. This recessed face serves a critical protective function, shielding the tip's seating surface from nicking and damage if the torch is accidentally bumped against the workpiece. Furthermore, the concave design helps to stabilize the flame and reduce the occurrence of backfires and flameouts, which are common when working in confined spaces or at awkward angles. The internal bore is fully swaged and smoothed, promoting laminar gas flow. This results in faster preheat starts and minimizes slag accumulation inside the tip, ensuring consistent performance over a longer service life.

Capacity and Application
With a tip size of 3, the SC14-3 is rated for cutting capacities up to 1-1/2 inches (38 mm). It is particularly effective for "washing" the heads off rivets and bolts, allowing for their removal without gouging or damaging the underlying base plate. It is also suitable for use in 180-degree head cutting torches for boiler tube removal.
