OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of the Smith SC60-2 Propylene Cutting Tip

The Smith SC60-2 is a heavy-duty, size 2 cutting tip engineered specifically for use with propylene and propylene-based fuel gases. Designed to meet the rigorous demands of industrial metal fabrication and MRO applications, this tip features a robust two-piece construction. It is rated to cut mild steel ranging from 3/4 inch to 1-1/4 inches (19 mm to 32 mm) in thickness. The SC60 series is renowned for its reliability and performance in heavy-duty environments, making it a standard choice for professionals utilizing Smith equipment.

Technically, the SC60-2 utilizes an in-tip gas mixing methodology. This design feature is critical for safety and efficiency; by combining the preheat oxygen and fuel gas within the tip itself rather than in the torch head, the system significantly reduces the volume of mixed gas present. This adds a substantial layer of resistance against flashbacks and sustained backfires. The tip requires a cutting oxygen flow rate of 105–135 SCFH, a preheat oxygen flow rate of 38 SCFH, and a preheat propylene flow rate of 9 SCFH to achieve optimal thermal dynamics for cutting.

The physical geometry of the tip includes a concave-shaped end. This recess helps protect the orifice from damage if the torch accidentally touches the workpiece and aids in resisting flameout. Furthermore, the internal bore is fully swaged and smooth, which promotes laminar gas flow. This results in a stable flame, faster starts, and significantly minimized slag accumulation, ensuring that cuts are clean and precise. The tip seats are designed to resist nicking, ensuring a tight seal and longer operational life.

This tip is compatible with a wide range of Smith equipment, including DG200 and SC200 series cutting attachments (up to size SC60-5), all Smith SC and DG series hand torches, Smith 2-hose cutting torches (up to size SC60-6), and all Smith 3-hose machine cutting torches. It is also suitable for use with machine torches SC770 and SC772A.

FAQ

The Smith SC60-2 cutting tip is designed to cut metal thicknesses ranging from 3/4 inch to 1-1/4 inches (approximately 19mm to 32mm).

This tip is engineered specifically for use with Propylene or propylene-based fuel gases. It should not be used with Acetylene.

It fits DG200 and SC200 series cutting attachments, all Smith SC and DG series hand torches, Smith 2-hose cutting torches, and all Smith 3-hose machine cutting torches (including SC770 and SC772A).

The SC60-2 features in-tip mixing, meaning the tip itself acts as the mixer for the preheat oxygen and fuel gas. This eliminates the need for a separate mixer in the torch head for these gases.

Because it is a two-piece tip, you can separate the outer shell from the inner member for easier cleaning. Use a proper tip cleaner tool to remove slag and debris from the orifices without damaging the splines.

The concave shape protects the tip orifices from damage if the tip touches the work surface. It also helps create a stagnation zone that resists flameout and reduces the likelihood of backfire.

For optimal performance, Smith recommends a cutting oxygen flow of 105-135 SCFH, preheat oxygen at 38 SCFH, and propylene fuel at 9 SCFH. Pressure settings will vary based on hose length and regulator type.

The SC60-2 is classified as a heavy-duty cutting tip, suitable for demanding industrial applications.
