OVERVIEW

Smith SC50-2 Heavy-Duty Propane & Natural Gas Cutting Tip

The Smith SC50-2 is a premium Size 2 cutting tip engineered specifically for use with alternate fuel gases such as propane and natural gas. Manufactured by Smith Equipment (Miller | Smith), this tip represents the pinnacle of oxy-fuel cutting technology for industrial applications. The SC50 series is renowned for its heavy-duty performance, making it the preferred choice for scrap yards, fabrication shops, and structural steel environments where propane is the fuel of choice. This specific Size 2 tip is rated for cutting mild steel thicknesses around 1 inch (25.4mm), providing a clean, precise kerf with minimal slag accumulation.

One of the defining characteristics of the SC50-2 is its two-piece construction. Unlike single-piece acetylene tips, this design features a brass inner member with splines and a copper outer shell. This configuration allows for the specific gas flow requirements of propane, which requires a different oxygen-to-fuel ratio and mixing turbulence than acetylene. The "Heavy Preheat" designation indicates that this tip produces a robust preheat flame, essential for quickly bringing the steel to kindling temperature, especially when dealing with material that is covered in rust, mill scale, or primer. This ensures that travel speeds remain high and production does not stall.

Safety is paramount in the design of Smith cutting tips. The SC50-2 utilizes In-Tip Gas Mixing technology. By mixing the preheat oxygen and fuel gas within the tip itself—rather than in the torch head or tube—the system significantly reduces the volume of mixed gas present. In the event of a flashback, the reaction is contained within the replaceable tip, protecting the expensive torch handle and the operator. Additionally, the tip features a concave end which helps recess the orifices, protecting them from damage if the tip touches the work, and further aiding in flame stability and backfire resistance.

This tip is designed to fit a wide range of Smith Equipment torches, including the DG200 and SC200 cutting attachments, as well as all SC and DG series hand torches and 3-hose machine torches. The "Soft Seat" design, often incorporating a graphitic material, ensures a positive seal into the torch head without requiring excessive tightening force, preserving the life of the torch seat.

FAQ

The SC50-2 is designed for use with Propane or Natural Gas. It should not be used with Acetylene.

The Size 2 (SC50-2) tip generally has a cutting range of approximately 1 inch (25mm) to 1-1/4 inch (32mm) thick steel.

No, this tip is designed specifically for Smith Equipment torches (SC and DG series). It will not fit Victor, Harris, or Airco style torches.

You can separate the outer copper shell from the inner brass member. This allows you to easily clean the splines and the inside of the shell without damaging the orifices.

Heavy preheat means the tip has more or larger preheat orifices to generate more heat. This is beneficial for propane (which burns cooler than acetylene) and for cutting dirty, rusty, or painted steel.

That gap is normal for 2-piece propane tips. The preheat gas flows through the splines between the inner and outer pieces, while the cutting oxygen flows through the center bore.

While it produces a flame, it is a cutting tip. For dedicated heating applications, a heating tip is recommended, but the heavy preheat of the SC50 series does allow for some pre-heating capability before cutting.
