The Smith SC50-9 is a specialized, high-capacity cutting tip designed for the most demanding industrial environments. Engineered by Smith Equipment (Miller), this Size 9 tip is part of the SC50 Series, specifically optimized for use with alternate fuel gases such as Propane and Natural Gas. Unlike standard acetylene tips, this unit features a two-piece construction consisting of an outer shell and an inner member. This design creates a recessed tip end (skirt) which anchors the flame, providing the stability required for the slower burning characteristics of propane while protecting the tip face from molten splatter.

With a staggering cutting capacity of up to 20 inches (508mm), the SC50-9 is built for heavy fabrication, scrapping, and mill applications where standard equipment falls short. To manage such thick material, the tip utilizes a "Heavy Preheat" configuration. This delivers a high volume of preheat gas to the work surface, bringing massive steel sections to ignition temperature rapidly, reducing dwell time and increasing productivity.

Safety and longevity are core to the Smith design philosophy. The SC50-9 employs Smith's renowned "Slip-In" technology. The tip simply slides into the torch head and is tightened by hand using the tip nut—no wrench is required. This prevents overtightening and thread damage, a common issue with threaded tips. Furthermore, the tip features "In-Tip Mixing," where the oxygen and fuel gas are mixed only within the tip itself, not in the torch tubes. This significantly reduces the volume of mixed gas, thereby minimizing the potential energy of a flashback and greatly enhancing operator safety. The soft, heat-resistant seats are recessed to prevent damage if the tip is dropped, ensuring a long service life and consistent positive seals.
