OVERVIEW

Smith SC2-4 Heavy-Duty Propane Gouging Tip Overview

The Smith SC2-4 is a specialized heavy-duty gouging tip engineered for industrial metal preparation and weld removal. Designed explicitly for use with Propane and Natural Gas, this tip leverages a two-piece construction method common in alternative fuel consumables. The two-piece design includes a splined brass inner member and a heavy copper outer shell, which facilitates the proper mixing and velocity required for effective gouging with slower-burning fuel gases. This configuration ensures a stable preheat flame and a controlled oxygen stream necessary for washing away molten metal without severing the workpiece entirely.

Functionally, the SC2-4 is rated to produce a groove approximately 3/8 inch (10 mm) wide and 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep. This makes it an essential tool for "veeing" out cracks in preparation for repair welding, removing defective welds, or preparing plate edges. The tip geometry is sophisticated; it features a concave-shaped end which serves a dual purpose. First, it recesses the orifices slightly, protecting them from damage if the tip contacts the work surface. Second, this recess creates a small turbulence zone that helps anchor the flame, significantly reducing the occurrence of backfire and resisting flameout even under aggressive gouging conditions.

Fluid dynamics within the tip are managed by a fully swaged smooth interior. This manufacturing process eliminates internal roughness that can cause turbulence in the gas flow. The result is a laminar flow that promotes fast starts and, crucially, minimizes the adherence of slag and spatter to the tip face. For maintenance and longevity, the design allows for safer and easier cleaning from the back of the tip, and the seating surfaces are hardened to protect against nicking during installation. The SC2-4 is fully compatible with Smith's heavy-duty ecosystem, fitting DG200 and SC200 series cutting attachments, as well as all SC and DG series hand torches and compatible machine torches.

FAQ

The SC2-4 is designed for use with Propane or Natural Gas. It is not suitable for Acetylene.

This tip typically produces a groove that is 3/8 inch (10 mm) wide and 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep.

It fits Smith DG200 and SC200 series cutting attachments, all SC and DG series hand torches, and compatible machine torches like the SC770.

This is a two-piece tip, consisting of a brass inner member and a copper outer shell, which is standard for propane tips.

The concave shape protects the tip orifices from damage and helps reduce backfire and resist flameout by shielding the flame base.

The design allows for safer cleaning from the back of the tip. Always use appropriate tip cleaners designed for two-piece tips to avoid damaging the splines.

While it can sever metal, it is designed for gouging (removing surface metal) rather than through-cutting. A standard cutting tip is better for severing.

Swaging is a manufacturing process that smooths the interior of the tip, reducing gas turbulence for a better flame and less slag accumulation.
