OVERVIEW

Technical Overview

The Lincoln Electric K2989-XXXL Heavy Duty Leather Welding Jacket is a specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) garment designed to mitigate thermal hazards associated with high-amperage welding processes. Engineered primarily for Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) and Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG), this jacket employs a hybrid material construction to optimize both protection and operator ergonomics. The anterior panels and sleeves are fabricated from premium heavy-duty split cowhide leather. This material is selected for its high density and superior resistance to abrasion, molten spatter, and radiant heat, providing a robust barrier for the areas of the body most exposed to the welding arc.

To address the issue of heat stress in industrial environments, the posterior panel of the jacket is constructed from 9 oz. flame-retardant (FR) cotton. This design choice facilitates thermal regulation by allowing air circulation across the back, significantly reducing the physiological burden on the welder compared to full-leather garments. Despite its breathability, the FR cotton maintains compliance with safety standards for incidental flame contact. The structural integrity of the garment is reinforced using Kevlar® stitching throughout all seams. Kevlar® is utilized for its exceptional tensile strength and inherent resistance to thermal degradation, ensuring that seams remain intact even after prolonged exposure to sparks and heat.

The K2989-XXXL features a flip-up collar secured by a hook-and-loop (Velcro) mechanism, designed to shield the neck from ultraviolet radiation and flying debris. The front closure system consists of a series of snaps concealed behind a leather flap, which prevents the metal snaps from becoming superheated or accumulating spatter. Additionally, the jacket includes an internal pocket on the left chest, providing a protected enclosure for small tools or personal items. With a length of 35 inches, the 3XL sizing ensures adequate overlap with lower-body protective gear, minimizing gaps in protection.

FAQ

The jacket features a hybrid design with heavy-duty split cowhide leather on the chest and sleeves for maximum protection, and 9 oz. flame-retardant cotton on the back for breathability.

No, due to the split cowhide leather construction, this jacket should not be machine washed. It should be spot cleaned or cleaned by a leather specialist.

The 3XL (XXXL) size has a body length of approximately 35 inches, providing extended coverage for the torso.

Yes, it features one large inside pocket on the left side for protected storage of small items.

The jacket is stitched with Kevlar® thread, which offers superior resistance to heat and abrasion compared to standard threads.

While it can be used for TIG welding, it is designed primarily for Stick and MIG welding where spatter is heavier. TIG welders often prefer lighter weight all-cotton or lighter leather jackets for better mobility.

The jacket features a flip-up collar that secures with a hook-and-loop (Velcro style) closure to protect the neck area.
