Acetylene cylinders typically require requalification every 10 years from the date of manufacture or the last retest date, although some specific types may require 5-year intervals.
If a cylinder fails the inspection due to structural damage, corrosion, or porous mass issues, it must be condemned and removed from service for safety reasons. It cannot be returned to the customer for use.
No, the retest fee covers the inspection, testing, and stamping of the cylinder only. Gas refills are a separate charge.
Acetylene cylinders contain a porous mass filler and a solvent. The testing process must ensure this internal structure is intact to prevent the gas from becoming unstable, which requires specific visual and physical inspection techniques different from standard hydrostatic expansion tests.
