OVERVIEW

High-Performance Thermal Management for Aluminum Welding

The Lincoln Electric KP2745-116AT is a premium contact tip engineered specifically for the Magnum® PRO series of MIG welding guns. Designed to address the unique thermal and mechanical challenges of high-amperage aluminum welding, this consumable integrates Lincoln's proprietary Copper Plus® technology. Unlike standard contact tips, Copper Plus® tips feature a larger outer diameter and a denser copper alloy composition. This increased mass acts as a superior heat sink, rapidly drawing thermal energy away from the bore and the arc zone. By maintaining lower operating temperatures, the tip resists the softening and deformation that typically lead to keyholing and erratic arc transfer, particularly in high-duty cycle applications rated up to 550 amps.

Aluminum welding wire has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion compared to steel, which often leads to feeding issues if the contact tip bore is not precisely calibrated. The KP2745-116AT is manufactured with specific tolerances to accommodate 1/16-inch (1.6 mm) aluminum wire, ensuring consistent electrical contact without binding as the wire heats up. The tapered geometry of the tip further enhances operational efficiency by reducing the front-end profile, thereby improving gas coverage in restricted joints and allowing the operator better visual access to the weld puddle.

Anti-Seize™ Thread Technology

A critical failure point in industrial MIG welding is the seizing of the contact tip within the gas diffuser due to thermal cycling and spatter accumulation. This product features Lincoln's Anti-Seize™ thread design, which utilizes a flattened thread profile to reduce surface contact area while maintaining secure mechanical locking. This innovation prevents the tip from fusing to the diffuser, ensuring that maintenance personnel and operators can perform changeouts quickly and without the need for pliers or excessive force, thereby preserving the integrity of the gun's front-end parts.

FAQ

These contact tips are designed exclusively for the Lincoln Electric Magnum® PRO series of MIG welding guns.

This tip is sized for 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) welding wire.

The 'A' in the SKU and the engineering specifications denote that the bore tolerance is optimized for aluminum wire, which expands more than steel when heated. Using a standard steel tip for aluminum can cause feeding issues.

Copper Plus tips have a larger diameter and mass, which improves heat dissipation. This keeps the tip cooler, extends its lifespan, and maintains better electrical conductivity.

Tapered refers to the shape of the tip's nose. A tapered tip is narrower at the end, allowing for better visibility of the weld pool and easier access into tight corners compared to standard flat tips.

The threads have a specialized profile that reduces the contact surface area slightly to prevent the metal from fusing (seizing) to the diffuser under high heat, making removal much easier.

This product is sold as a package of 10 contact tips.

While it may physically fit 1/16" steel wire, the bore is slightly oversized to accommodate aluminum expansion. For steel, it is recommended to use the standard steel version for optimal arc stability.
