OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: Lincoln Electric KP2744-116A-B100

The Lincoln Electric KP2744-116A-B100 is a premium consumable designed specifically for industrial aluminum MIG welding applications. Part of the Magnum® PRO series, these contact tips are engineered to address the unique thermal and mechanical challenges associated with feeding aluminum wire. The tip features a 1/16-inch (1.6 mm) nominal diameter but is manufactured with a specific internal geometry—denoted by the 'A' suffix—that accounts for the higher coefficient of thermal expansion found in aluminum alloys compared to steel. This precise tolerancing prevents the wire from binding or seizing within the tip as it heats up during the welding process, a critical factor in maintaining a stable arc and preventing burnback.

Material composition is a key differentiator for the KP2744-116A. Unlike standard C122 DHP copper tips, these are manufactured from Lincoln's proprietary Copper Plus® alloy. This material exhibits superior thermal conductivity and hardness retention at elevated temperatures. In high-amperage applications (up to and exceeding 350A), standard copper can soften and deform, leading to 'keyholing'—where the bore becomes oval-shaped—resulting in poor electrical contact and erratic arc characteristics. The Copper Plus® alloy resists this deformation, ensuring consistent current transfer and significantly extending the lifespan of the consumable. This translates to fewer tip changes per shift and higher overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

The KP2744-116A-B100 is supplied in a bulk pack of 100 units, optimized for high-volume manufacturing environments such as trailer fabrication, marine construction, and automotive assembly. The tips utilize the Magnum® PRO coarse thread design, which serves two technical purposes: it provides a robust mechanical connection that resists loosening due to vibration, and it offers a larger surface area for heat transfer from the tip to the diffuser and gun neck. This efficient thermal management path further aids in keeping the tip temperature within the optimal operating range. These tips are compatible with the full range of Magnum® PRO semi-automatic and robotic MIG guns.

FAQ

The 'A' indicates that the contact tip is specifically designed for Aluminum wire. It features a slightly larger internal bore compared to standard steel tips to accommodate the greater thermal expansion of aluminum as it heats up.

It is not recommended. While the wire would physically fit, the bore is oversized for 1/16" steel wire. This loose fit can lead to poor electrical contact, micro-arcing inside the tip, and an unstable arc.

Copper Plus is a proprietary Lincoln Electric alloy that provides higher thermal conductivity and retains hardness at higher temperatures than standard copper. This prevents the tip from softening and keyholing, resulting in longer tip life.

These tips are compatible with Lincoln Electric Magnum® PRO series MIG guns, including semi-automatic hand guns and robotic torch models.

This is a bulk package containing 100 individual contact tips (Part number suffix -B100).

This tip is sized for 1/16 inch (1.6 mm) welding wire.

They use the Magnum PRO specific coarse thread design, which helps prevent cross-threading and seizing, and improves heat transfer to the diffuser.

Aluminum wire is softer and expands more than steel. Using a standard tip can cause the wire to bind (burnback) or feed erratically. These tips are engineered to prevent those specific issues.
