The Lincoln Electric Magnum SG Spool Gun (K487-25) is a specialized semiautomatic wire feeding unit designed to address the mechanical challenges of feeding soft welding wires, particularly aluminum. In standard push-style MIG systems, feeding aluminum wire through cables longer than 10 feet often results in buckling, friction, and "birdnesting" due to the material's low columnar strength. The Magnum SG resolves this by mounting a 4-inch (1 lb) wire spool directly onto the rear of the gun, reducing the travel distance of the wire to mere inches.

Engineered for industrial durability, this unit is rated at 250 Amps at a 60% duty cycle using CO2 gas, making it suitable for medium-to-heavy fabrication tasks. It supports wire diameters ranging from .030 inches to 3/64 inches (0.8 mm to 1.2 mm). A critical feature for operational efficiency is the integrated remote wire speed control potentiometer located on the handle. This allows the operator to fine-tune the wire feed speed (WFS) at the point of welding without returning to the power source, significantly improving workflow in large-scale assembly or repair environments.
