OVERVIEW

High-Performance Zirconiated Tungsten Electrodes for AC Welding

Optimize your aluminum and magnesium welding applications with our premium Zirconiated Tungsten Electrodes. Identified by the industry-standard white color code, these electrodes are specifically engineered for Alternating Current (AC) TIG welding, offering a superior balance between the arc stability of pure tungsten and the current-carrying capacity of alloyed alternatives. The 3/32-inch diameter provides excellent versatility for medium-to-heavy gauge materials, making it a staple in fabrication shops, aerospace maintenance, and automotive repair facilities.

Zirconiated tungsten (AWS classification EWZr-1) contains a small amount of zirconium oxide, which significantly enhances the electrode's performance characteristics compared to pure tungsten. It excels at retaining a balled end during welding, which is essential for maintaining a stable arc and achieving the necessary cleaning action on aluminum surfaces. Furthermore, these electrodes demonstrate exceptional resistance to contamination, ensuring that the weld pool remains pure and free from tungsten inclusions. This makes them an ideal choice for radiographic-quality welds where structural integrity is paramount.

Unlike thoriated electrodes, zirconiated tungsten minimizes the risk of spitting, even at higher amperage settings. While primarily designed for AC applications, they offer reliable arc starting and consistent performance. These 7-inch electrodes are ground to precision tolerances to ensure consistent conductivity and fitment in standard TIG torches. Whether you are welding thin aluminum sheet or thicker structural components, the T332X7ZIR electrode delivers the control and quality required for professional results.

Key Industrial Benefits:

  • Enhanced Current Capacity: Handles higher amperage loads than pure tungsten without breaking down.
  • Contamination Resistance: Resists spitting and tungsten inclusion, vital for X-ray quality welds.
  • Stable Arc Profile: Maintains a perfect balled tip for consistent AC sine wave distribution.
  • Material Specificity: Optimized specifically for aluminum and magnesium alloys.

FAQ

White Zirconiated tungsten handles higher amperage and resists contamination better than Green Pure tungsten, while still retaining the ability to ball up effectively for AC welding.

It is not recommended. Zirconiated tungsten is designed for AC welding. For DC welding on steel, Thoriated (Red) or Lanthanated (Blue/Gold) electrodes are superior choices.

For AC welding, a balled tip is desired. You can achieve this by using a DCEP setting briefly on a piece of scrap copper to form the ball, or allowing the AC arc to naturally form the ball during use.

No, Zirconiated tungsten is not radioactive. It is a safe alternative to Thoriated tungsten for AC applications.

A 3/32" Zirconiated electrode typically operates best between 150 and 250 Amps on AC, depending on the machine's balance settings and the gas cup size.

The White color code is the AWS and ISO standard identification for Zirconiated Tungsten (EWZr-1) to distinguish it from other types like Pure (Green) or Thoriated (Red).
