OVERVIEW

Industrial Grade General Purpose Brazing Flux

The Lucas Milhaupt Handy B-1 Flux is a premium, general-purpose brazing paste designed for a wide array of industrial metal joining applications. Recognized globally for its consistency and performance, this flux is engineered to dissolve refractory oxides and prevent oxidation during the heating cycle, ensuring a clean surface for filler metal adhesion. Packaged in a substantial 5 lb (2.27 kg) jar, this product is ideal for high-volume production environments, maintenance shops, and heavy-duty fabrication facilities requiring reliable fluxing agents.

Formulated to meet AWS A5.31 Type FB3-A specifications, Handy B-1 Flux operates effectively within an active temperature range of 1100°F to 1600°F (593°C to 871°C). This broad thermal window makes it compatible with the vast majority of silver brazing filler metals. The flux begins to melt and dissolve oxides at 600°F (315°C) and becomes fully active and clear at 1100°F (593°C), providing the operator with a critical visual indicator that the base metal has reached the appropriate brazing temperature. This feature is particularly valuable in maintaining quality control in manual brazing operations.

The paste consistency is optimized for brush application, offering excellent adhesion to workpieces, including vertical and overhead surfaces, without running or dripping excessively. It is chemically compatible with virtually all ferrous and non-ferrous base metals, including steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze, and nickel alloys (excluding aluminum and magnesium). The chemical composition ensures deep capillary action, drawing the brazing alloy into the joint for high-strength, leak-proof connections. Post-process cleanup is efficient, as the flux residue is water-soluble and can be removed with hot water, streamlining the finishing process.

FAQ

Handy B-1 Flux is active between 1100°F and 1600°F (593°C - 871°C). It begins to dissolve oxides at 600°F (315°C) and turns completely clear at 1100°F.

It is suitable for use with almost all ferrous and non-ferrous base metals, including steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, bronze, nickel, and monel. It is NOT suitable for aluminum, magnesium, or titanium.

The residue left by Handy B-1 Flux is water-soluble. It can be easily removed by washing the part in hot water (approx. 140°F/60°C). Chipping or wire brushing may help remove hardened glass-like residues.

Yes, Lucas Milhaupt Handy B-1 Flux meets the requirements of AWS A5.31 Type FB3-A, AMS 3410, and Federal Specification O-F-499, Type B.

This is a high-temperature brazing flux designed for silver brazing alloys. It is generally not used for soft soldering (lead/tin) which occurs at much lower temperatures, though it can be used if the temperature range aligns.

When stored properly in a cool, dry place with the lid tightly sealed, Handy B-1 Flux has a shelf life of approximately one to two years. If the paste dries out, it can often be reconstituted with a small amount of water.

The residue can be corrosive if left on the part for extended periods, which is why post-braze cleaning with hot water is recommended immediately after the part has cooled sufficiently.
