When the workpiece reaches 500°F, the dry, opaque mark left by the Tempilstik instantly liquefies into a distinct, transparent smear. This phase change is accurate to within +/- 1% of the rated temperature, making it compliant with stringent codes such as AWS D1.1, ASME Code I, III, and VIII, and ANSI/ASME Code B31.1 and B31.3. This level of accuracy is essential for quality assurance in processes like preheating, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT), annealing, and stress relieving.
