Its primary technical function is to shield the delicate glass surface of the filter from particulate matter, moisture, and mechanical abrasion that can occur within the helmet cavity.

In industrial welding environments, the interior of a welding helmet is subject to humidity from operator respiration and perspiration, as well as fine metallic dust that can bypass the face seal.
