OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Nexalloy 5356 Aluminum MIG Wire

The Nexalloy 5356 is a premium quality aluminum filler metal classified under AWS A5.10 as ER5356. This 0.045-inch diameter wire is supplied on a 5lb spool, designed for Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) processes. The alloy composition is primarily aluminum with approximately 5% magnesium, supplemented by controlled additions of manganese, titanium, and chromium. These alloying elements serve to refine the grain structure and significantly enhance mechanical properties compared to standard aluminum grades.

One of the defining characteristics of the Nexalloy 5356 series is its exceptional corrosion resistance. The specific chemical formulation, which includes a slight reduction in silicon and an increase in magnesium, makes this wire the industry standard for welding 5000-series base metals (such as 5052, 5083, and 5086) and 6000-series alloys (like 6061) when high strength is required. It is particularly noted for its performance in saltwater environments, resisting pitting and oxidation that can compromise lesser alloys.

Mechanically, this wire produces welds with relatively high shear strength and good ductility. It typically yields a tensile strength in the range of 39,000 psi (as welded). The melting range is approximately 1060°F to 1175°F. It is recommended for use with Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) polarity and requires 100% Argon or Argon/Helium shielding gas mixtures. Due to its magnesium content, it is not recommended for applications where service temperatures exceed 150°F (65°C) to avoid stress corrosion cracking, but it remains the top choice for general structural and marine fabrication.

FAQ

For MIG welding with Nexalloy 5356, use 100% Argon gas. For thicker sections, an Argon/Helium mixture can be used to increase heat input.

Yes, Nexalloy 5356 provides an excellent color match after anodizing, unlike 4043 alloys which often turn dark gray.

Yes, ER5356 is commonly used to weld 6061 base metals, especially when higher tensile strength is required compared to ER4043.

This specific product is 0.045 inches (approximately 1.2mm) in diameter.

While 0.045" aluminum wire is stiffer than thinner gauges, using a spool gun or a push-pull system is highly recommended to prevent feeding issues (bird-nesting) common with aluminum.

5356 has higher shear strength and better corrosion resistance, particularly in saltwater, whereas 4043 flows better and is less sensitive to cracking in some applications but is weaker.

This product comes on a 5lb (approx. 2.27kg) spool.

No, 5356 alloys are not recommended for service temperatures above 150°F (65°C) due to susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
