OVERVIEW

ESAB OK Autrod 5356: The Industry Standard for Aluminum Welding

The ESAB OK Autrod 5356 is a premium quality aluminum-magnesium alloy (AlMg5) MIG welding wire designed for general-purpose welding of 5XXX series alloys. As the most widely used aluminum welding alloy in the industry, it is favored for its excellent balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and workability. This 9.07 kg (20 lb) spool comes in a 1/16-inch (1.6 mm) diameter, suitable for heavy-duty industrial fabrication where high deposition rates are required.

OK Autrod 5356 is typically chosen over 4043 alloys when higher shear strength is required. The 5% magnesium content provides superior mechanical properties, making it the filler metal of choice for structural applications. It is compatible with base materials such as 5050, 5052, 5083, 5356, 5454, and 5456. Additionally, this alloy offers a good color match with the base metal after anodizing, unlike 4043 which turns dark gray.

Technical Considerations: While OK Autrod 5356 is highly versatile, it is important to note that 5XXX series alloys with a weld pool chemistry greater than 3% Magnesium are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking if exposed to service temperatures in excess of 65°C (150°F). For high-temperature applications, alternative alloys may be required. This alloy is non-heat treatable.

ESAB's precision winding technology ensures consistent wire feeding, minimizing arc instability and contact tip burn-back. Whether for tank fabrication, architectural structures, or general repair, the OK Autrod 5356 delivers reliable, high-quality welds.

FAQ

For MIG welding with ER5356, use 100% Argon for thicknesses up to about 1/2 inch. For thicker sections, an Argon/Helium mixture (e.g., 75% Ar / 25% He) can improve heat input and penetration.

This specific spool contains wire with a diameter of 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6 mm).

Yes, ER5356 is commonly used to weld 6061 base metals, especially when higher tensile strength is required compared to ER4043. However, check engineering specs as 4043 is less crack-sensitive on some 6061 applications.

Yes, ER5356 provides a very good color match after anodizing, unlike ER4043 which tends to turn dark gray or black.

The spool weighs 9.07 kg, which is approximately 20 lbs.

No, the 5356 alloy is non-heat treatable.

5356 is stiffer (has higher column strength) than 4043, making it easier to feed through MIG guns without buckling or bird-nesting.

Yes, 5356 should not be used for applications with service temperatures exceeding 150°F (65°C) due to susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
