OVERVIEW

Premium Grade ER4043 Aluminum-Silicon TIG Filler Metal

The Nexalloy 4043 TIG Rod is a high-quality aluminum welding consumable designed for the Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) process. Classified as AWS A5.10 ER4043, this filler metal is characterized by its 5% silicon content, which serves as the primary alloying element. The addition of silicon significantly depresses the melting point of the aluminum, creating a eutectic-like behavior that enhances fluidity and wetting action during the weld. This metallurgical property makes ER4043 exceptionally forgiving to use, as the molten pool flows smoothly into the joint, ensuring excellent sidewall fusion and reducing the likelihood of lack-of-fusion defects.

One of the critical technical advantages of Nexalloy 4043 is its low sensitivity to weld cracking. Aluminum alloys, particularly the heat-treatable 6XXX series, are prone to solidification cracking (hot cracking) when welded with filler metals that do not possess adequate ductility or freezing ranges. The 4043 alloy mitigates this risk, making it the preferred choice for welding 6061, 6063, and 3003 base metals, as well as for repairing 356.0 cast aluminum components. While it offers moderate tensile strength, its crack resistance makes it indispensable for rigid structures where shrinkage stresses are high.

It is important to note that while ER4043 produces a bright, clean weld bead, it is not recommended for applications requiring color-matched anodizing. The silicon content will turn the weld area a dark gray or black color after the anodizing process. For applications where post-weld anodizing color consistency is critical, an alloy like ER5356 would be more appropriate. However, for general industrial fabrication, automotive components, and structural repairs where ease of welding and joint integrity are paramount, Nexalloy 4043 remains the industry standard. This product is supplied in a 10lb tube, ensuring the 36-inch rods remain straight and protected from atmospheric contaminants until use.

FAQ

4043 contains silicon, which makes it flow better and reduces crack sensitivity, making it easier to use and better for 6061 or castings. 5356 contains magnesium, offering higher tensile strength and better color match for anodizing, but it is stiffer and more prone to cracking in some applications.

Yes, ER4043 is one of the most common filler metals for welding 6061 base materials. It is preferred for its resistance to hot cracking, although 5356 is sometimes used if higher shear strength is required.

No, if color matching is important. The silicon in 4043 will cause the weld bead to turn a dark gray or black color after anodizing. Use ER5356 if the part needs to be anodized to match the base metal.

Amperage depends on the thickness of the base metal, not just the rod size. However, for material thick enough to require a 1/8" rod (usually 1/8" to 1/4" thick), you will typically be running between 120 and 200 amps on AC.

Yes, 4043 is generally the best choice for repairing cast aluminum parts (like engine blocks or transmission cases) because its high silicon content allows it to flow well and resist cracking as the weld cools.

100% Argon is the standard shielding gas for TIG welding aluminum with ER4043. Helium mixtures can be used for thicker sections to increase heat input, but pure Argon is sufficient for most applications.

Keep the rods in the tube when not in use to prevent them from collecting dust, oil, or moisture. Store in a dry area. If they get dirty, wipe them down with acetone before welding.

This product meets the AWS A5.10 specification for the classification ER4043.
