OVERVIEW

Premium Stainless Steel Welding with Avesta E308L

The Avesta E308L AC/DC 4.0mm Stick Electrode is a high-performance consumable designed for the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) of austenitic stainless steels. Specifically engineered to meet the AWS E308L-17 classification, this electrode is the industry standard for welding 18% Cr / 8% Ni stainless steels, such as AISI 304 and 304L. The 'L' designation indicates a low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which is critical for minimizing carbide precipitation during the welding process, thereby reducing the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone.

This electrode features a rutile-acid coating that provides exceptional weldability on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DC+). The 4.0mm diameter is optimized for filling joints in medium to thicker sections of base metal, offering higher deposition rates than smaller diameter rods while maintaining control. The slag system is designed to be self-releasing, often curling up and detaching on its own as the weld cools, which significantly reduces post-weld cleaning time and labor costs. The resulting weld bead is smooth, finely rippled, and aesthetically pleasing, requiring minimal grinding or polishing.

Avesta's proprietary formulation ensures excellent arc ignition and re-ignition, making it suitable for tacking and short runs as well as continuous welding. It performs well in all positions, though the 4.0mm size is best suited for flat and horizontal-fillet applications due to the larger weld pool. Mechanical properties are robust, providing high tensile strength and ductility. This electrode is widely used in industries ranging from food and beverage processing to chemical storage and architectural fabrication, where material integrity and surface finish are paramount.

Storage and handling are straightforward; however, like all stainless electrodes, they should be kept dry to prevent porosity. If exposed to moisture, re-baking according to manufacturer specifications is recommended to restore optimal performance. The Avesta E308L represents a perfect balance of metallurgical quality and operator-friendly characteristics.

FAQ

This electrode is designed primarily for welding austenitic stainless steels of the 18Cr/8Ni type, specifically AISI 304 and 304L. It can also be used for stabilized grades like 321 and 347 for service temperatures not exceeding 400°C.

For a 4.0mm (5/32") E308L electrode, the typical amperage range is between 100A and 160A. The exact setting depends on your welding position and base metal thickness, but starting around 130A is usually a good baseline.

Yes, the Avesta E308L is designed with a coating that supports both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DC+). This makes it very versatile for shops with different types of power sources.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. This indicates that the carbon content is restricted to a maximum of 0.04%. Low carbon prevents the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during welding, which protects the weldment from intergranular corrosion (sensitization).

If the electrodes have been stored in a dry, hermetically sealed container, they can be used right away. However, if they have been exposed to moisture or humid air, it is recommended to re-bake them (typically at 350°C for 2 hours) to prevent porosity in the weld.

Generally, E308L-17 rods are not optimized for vertical down welding due to the fluidity of the slag. They are best used in flat, horizontal, and vertical up positions. For vertical down, a specific coating type would be required.

Avesta electrodes are renowned for their self-releasing slag. In many joint configurations, the slag will lift and curl off automatically as the weld cools, requiring minimal chipping compared to standard generic stainless rods.

While it is physically possible, E308L is not the correct choice for dissimilar joining (mild steel to stainless). For that application, you should use an E309L electrode to prevent cracking due to dilution.
