OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Bonarc ER316L

The Bonarc ER316L is a premium austenitic stainless steel TIG welding rod designed to meet the rigorous demands of industrial fabrication involving AISI 316 and 316L base metals. This filler metal is characterized by its specific alloy composition, which includes Molybdenum (typically 2.0-3.0%). The addition of Molybdenum is critical as it significantly enhances the weld metal's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in environments containing chlorides, such as marine atmospheres or chemical processing plants.

Classified under AWS A5.9 as ER316L, the 'L' designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.03%). This controlled carbon level is essential for preventing sensitization—the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries—during the welding process. By mitigating sensitization, the Bonarc ER316L maintains high resistance to intergranular corrosion, ensuring the longevity and structural integrity of the weldment even in aggressive media. It is also metallurgically compatible with stainless steels stabilized with Titanium (Ti) or Niobium (Nb), provided the operating temperatures do not exceed 400°C.

This 2.4mm diameter rod is manufactured to precise tolerances to ensure consistent feeding and arc stability. The deposited weld metal exhibits excellent mechanical properties, including high tensile strength and ductility, matching or exceeding that of the base material. It is the preferred choice for critical applications in the petrochemical, pulp and paper, and textile industries where corrosion resistance is paramount.

FAQ

For TIG welding with ER316L, use 100% Argon. This ensures a stable arc and protects the molten pool from atmospheric contamination.

Yes, you can use ER316L to weld 304 stainless steel. It will provide a weld with higher corrosion resistance than the base metal. However, it is more expensive than the standard ER308L used for 304.

ER316L contains Molybdenum, which provides superior resistance to pitting and corrosion, especially in chloride (salty) environments. ER308L does not contain Molybdenum and is generally used for standard 304 stainless applications.

The 'L' stands for 'Low Carbon'. This indicates the carbon content is restricted to a maximum of 0.03%, which prevents carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion.

Use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as Straight Polarity, for TIG welding stainless steel.

ER316L is suitable for service temperatures up to approximately 350°C-400°C. For higher temperatures, a standard carbon grade (ER316H) might be required to maintain creep strength.

Keep them in the provided tube, closed, in a dry environment. Moisture and dust can cause porosity in your welds.

The typical tensile strength for ER316L weld metal is approximately 550-650 MPa, depending on welding parameters and dilution.
