OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Bonarc ER316L

The Bonarc ER316L is a premium austenitic stainless steel TIG welding rod designed for joining base metals of similar composition, such as AISI 316 and 316L. This filler metal is characterized by its Molybdenum content (typically 2.0–3.0%), which significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments like marine atmospheres or chemical processing plants.

The 'L' designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), which is critical for preventing sensitization—the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during the welding thermal cycle. This feature preserves the corrosion resistance of the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) without the need for post-weld heat treatment. Additionally, the alloy exhibits excellent creep strength at elevated temperatures and is suitable for welding steels stabilized with Titanium or Niobium.

Metallurgically, the deposit provides a ferrite number sufficient to prevent hot cracking while maintaining high ductility and toughness. It is the preferred choice for critical applications in the petrochemical, pulp and paper, and textile industries where standard 308L fillers may not provide adequate corrosion protection.

FAQ

100% Argon is the standard shielding gas for TIG welding stainless steel with ER316L rods. It provides a stable arc and protects the weld pool from oxidation.

ER316L contains Molybdenum, which provides superior corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides (salt) and acids, compared to ER308L. ER308L is typically used for 304 stainless, while ER316L is used for 316 stainless.

TIG welding with stainless steel rods like ER316L is performed using DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as Straight Polarity.

Yes, ER316L can be used to weld 304 stainless steel. It will provide a weld with higher corrosion resistance than the base metal. However, ER308L is the cost-effective standard for 304.

These rods are typically cut to a standard length of 1000mm (approximately 39 inches), which is the industry standard for TIG filler metals.

For a 4.0mm (5/32") tungsten and filler rod, the amperage range is typically between 150A and 250A, depending on the material thickness and joint configuration.

Generally, no. The 'L' (Low Carbon) designation ensures resistance to intergranular corrosion without the need for post-weld annealing in most applications.

Yes, 316L stainless steel is widely used in food and pharmaceutical applications due to its excellent corrosion resistance and cleanability.
