The Bonarc ER316L is a premium austenitic stainless steel TIG welding rod designed for joining base metals of similar composition, such as AISI 316 and 316L. This filler metal is characterized by its Molybdenum content (typically 2.0–3.0%), which significantly enhances its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments like marine atmospheres or chemical processing plants.
The 'L' designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), which is critical for preventing sensitization—the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during the welding thermal cycle. This feature preserves the corrosion resistance of the weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) without the need for post-weld heat treatment. Additionally, the alloy exhibits excellent creep strength at elevated temperatures and is suitable for welding steels stabilized with Titanium or Niobium.
Metallurgically, the deposit provides a ferrite number sufficient to prevent hot cracking while maintaining high ductility and toughness. It is the preferred choice for critical applications in the petrochemical, pulp and paper, and textile industries where standard 308L fillers may not provide adequate corrosion protection.
