OVERVIEW

Premium Grade ER316L Stainless Steel MIG Wire

The Bonarc ER316L .030" (0.8mm) MIG Wire is a high-quality austenitic stainless steel consumable designed for critical fabrication tasks requiring superior corrosion resistance. Formulated with a nominal composition of 18% Chromium, 12% Nickel, and 2-3% Molybdenum, this wire meets AWS A5.9 specifications. The addition of Molybdenum significantly enhances the alloy's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments such as marine applications or chemical processing plants.

This "L" grade (Low Carbon) variant ensures a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which is crucial for preventing carbide precipitation during the welding process. This feature minimizes the risk of intergranular corrosion in the heat-affected zone (HAZ), eliminating the need for post-weld annealing in many applications. The wire is precision-wound on a 5kg spool, ensuring consistent feedability and stable arc characteristics when used with standard MIG welding equipment.

Ideally suited for joining AISI 316 and 316L base metals, the Bonarc ER316L also performs exceptionally well on 304/304L grades where increased corrosion protection is desired. It is compatible with Argon/Oxygen or Argon/CO2 shielding gas mixtures, providing excellent wetting action and a clean, high-quality bead profile.

FAQ

For MIG welding stainless steel, a mixture of Argon with 1-2% Oxygen or 2-5% CO2 is recommended to ensure arc stability and good bead wetting.

Yes, ER316L can be used to weld 304 stainless steel and will provide excellent corrosion resistance, although ER308L is the standard match for 304.

The 'L' stands for 'Low Carbon'. This indicates a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which prevents carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion.

This wire is .030 inches (0.8mm) in diameter, suitable for a wide range of material thicknesses.

This is a solid MIG wire requiring an external shielding gas.

This is a 5kg (approx. 11lb) spool, typically a D200 size that fits most standard MIG welders.

Molybdenum increases the alloy's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride environments like saltwater.

Use DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive), also known as Reverse Polarity, for MIG welding with this wire.
