OVERVIEW

High-Performance Stainless Steel Joining

The Murex 308LSi .035" MIG Wire is a premium consumable designed for the rigorous demands of industrial stainless steel fabrication. Engineered with a specific chemical composition that includes a higher silicon content than standard 308L wires, this product addresses common challenges in stainless welding such as sluggish weld pools and poor bead aesthetics. The "Si" designation indicates this enhanced silicon level, which significantly improves the wetting action of the molten metal. This results in a flatter, smoother bead profile that ties in exceptionally well at the toes, reducing the potential for cold lap and minimizing post-weld finishing time.

This wire is classified as ER308LSi and is specifically formulated for joining 304 and 304L austenitic stainless steels, as well as other common "18-8" steels (18% chromium, 8% nickel). The "L" stands for Low Carbon, a critical feature that prevents carbide precipitation during the welding process. By maintaining low carbon levels, the wire preserves the corrosion resistance of the base material, particularly against intergranular corrosion, making it suitable for applications in corrosive environments such as chemical processing or food service equipment.

Supplied on a 25lb spool, this wire is intended for high-volume production environments using standard industrial wire feeders. The precision winding ensures consistent feedability, reducing the risk of bird-nesting or arc instability caused by feed fluctuations. Whether used with Argon/CO2 blends or tri-mix shielding gases, the Murex 308LSi delivers a stable arc, low spatter, and high-quality radiographic welds.

FAQ

For short-circuit transfer, a Tri-Mix (90% He, 7.5% Ar, 2.5% CO2) is often used. For spray transfer or general purpose, a mix of 98% Argon and 2% CO2 (or Oxygen) is common. Avoid 100% CO2 or 75/25 mixes used for mild steel, as they will compromise the stainless properties.

The 'Si' stands for Silicon. 308LSi has a higher silicon content (usually 0.65-1.00%) compared to standard 308L. This extra silicon improves the 'wetting' action of the puddle, allowing it to flow out flatter and smoother, which helps with bead appearance and tie-in.

It is not recommended. You should use 316L wire for 316 base metal to match the Molybdenum content for corrosion resistance. 308LSi is designed specifically for 304/304L grades.

This solid MIG wire is designed to be run on DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive), also known as Reverse Polarity.

No, for joining mild steel to stainless steel, you should use an ER309L or ER309LSi wire. Using 308LSi on mild steel can lead to cracking due to dilution issues.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. This indicates a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, which is critical for preventing carbide precipitation and maintaining corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone.

This wire is 0.035 inches (0.9 mm) in diameter, which is a versatile size for light to medium duty industrial fabrication.

For solid stainless steel wire like this, V-groove drive rolls are recommended. Knurled rolls should be avoided as they can mar the wire surface and cause liner clogging.
