OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Exocor E308L-17

The Exocor E308L-17 is a high-performance stainless steel stick electrode designed for joining austenitic chromium-nickel steels of the 18% Cr / 8% Ni type, specifically AISI 304 and 304L. The 'L' designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which is critical for minimizing the risk of intergranular carbide precipitation during the welding process. This metallurgical feature significantly enhances the weld metal's resistance to intergranular corrosion without the need for stabilizing elements such as niobium or titanium, making it suitable for service in corrosive environments where post-weld heat treatment is not possible.

This electrode features a -17 coating classification, which denotes a titania-silica based flux. This coating formulation is engineered to produce a spray-type transfer with very low spatter and a concave bead profile, which is particularly advantageous for fillet welds where smooth transitions are required to avoid stress risers. The slag system is slow-freezing, allowing for excellent wetting action and bead tie-in, and it is designed to be self-releasing in many conditions. While the tensile strength at elevated temperatures is not as high as the high-carbon 308H or stabilized 347 variants, the 308L-17 offers superior ductility and toughness for general fabrication.

Operable on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), this electrode provides versatility for various power sources. It is widely used in industries such as chemical processing, food and beverage manufacturing, and architectural fabrication where both metallurgical integrity and aesthetic finish are paramount.

FAQ

The main difference is the coating. E308L-16 has a basic-rutile coating that works well in all positions. E308L-17 has a silica-titania coating that provides a smoother arc, flatter bead, and easier slag removal, but is slightly less fluid in vertical-down positions.

Yes, the E308L-17 coating is designed to operate smoothly on both AC and DC+ (DCEP) currents.

It is primarily designed for welding ASTM 304 and 304L stainless steels. It can also be used for 301, 302, and 321 grades in certain applications.

For a 5/32" (4.0mm) E308L-17 electrode, the typical amperage range is between 110A and 160A, depending on the material thickness and position.

Low carbon (0.04% max) prevents the formation of chromium carbides at the grain boundaries during welding, which protects the weld area from intergranular corrosion (sensitization).

Stainless electrodes can absorb moisture. It is recommended to store them in a dry place. If they have been exposed to moisture, reconditioning in a rod oven at 250°C-300°C for 2 hours is recommended.

Yes, E308L-17 can be used in the overhead position, although smaller diameters are generally easier to control for out-of-position work.
