OVERVIEW

High-Performance Stainless Steel MIG Wire for Industrial Fabrication

The Exocor ER316LSi .045" Stainless Steel MIG Welding Wire is a premium filler metal designed for the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) of austenitic stainless steels. This wire is formulated with a higher silicon content (0.65-1.00%) than standard 316L, which significantly improves the wetting characteristics of the molten weld pool. The result is a smoother bead appearance, better tie-in at the toes of the weld, and increased travel speeds, making it an excellent choice for high-production environments.

Metallurgically, this wire mirrors the composition of type 316L base metals but with the added benefit of enhanced fluidity. It contains Molybdenum (2.0-3.0%), which provides superior resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-containing environments like marine atmospheres or chemical processing plants. The "L" designation indicates an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), which is critical for preventing carbide precipitation during welding. This ensures the weldment maintains its corrosion resistance without the need for post-weld annealing, preserving the integrity of the joint in harsh service conditions.

Packaged in a 33lb (15kg) spool, this wire is precision layer-wound to ensure consistent feeding and electrical conductivity, reducing liner wear and contact tip burn-back. It is compatible with standard DC+ (DCEP) MIG welding setups and performs optimally with Argon/CO2 blends or Helium-based tri-mix gases. Whether used for structural fabrication, pipe welding, or tank manufacturing, the Exocor ER316LSi delivers reliable, high-quality results that meet stringent AWS A5.9 specifications.

FAQ

The 'Si' stands for Silicon. ER316LSi has a higher silicon content (0.65-1.00%) compared to standard ER316L. This improves the 'wetting' action of the weld puddle, allowing it to flow better and create a smoother, flatter bead profile.

For MIG welding with ER316LSi, a mixture of 98% Argon and 2% CO2 is commonly used for spray arc transfer. For short circuit transfer or better color match, a Tri-mix gas (90% Helium, 7.5% Argon, 2.5% CO2) is often recommended.

Yes, you can weld 304 stainless with 316LSi wire, and it will produce a strong, corrosion-resistant weld. However, it is generally more expensive than 308L wire, which is the standard filler for 304 stainless.

This wire is designed for DCEP (Direct Current Electrode Positive), also known as Reverse Polarity.

Yes, the Molybdenum content in 316LSi provides excellent resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chlorides, making it ideal for marine environments.

This is a standard 33lb (15kg) spool, typically 12 inches (300mm) in diameter, designed to fit most industrial wire feeders.

Generally, no. The 'L' (Low Carbon) grade prevents carbide precipitation, meaning the weld retains corrosion resistance without the need for annealing in most applications.
