OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Selectarc E308L-16

The Selectarc E308L-16 is a high-performance rutile-basic coated manual metal arc (MMA) electrode designed for the welding of austenitic stainless steels of the 18% Cr / 10% Ni type. Specifically formulated to meet the AWS A5.4 E308L-16 classification, this electrode features an extra-low carbon content (maximum 0.04%), which significantly reduces the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries. This characteristic is critical for maintaining resistance to intergranular corrosion without the need for post-weld heat treatment, making it suitable for service temperatures up to 350°C (662°F).

The 4.0mm diameter is optimized for filling passes and welding thicker sections of base materials such as AISI 304, 304L, 302, and 321. The electrode operates with a soft, stable arc on both Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP). The chemical composition of the deposited weld metal typically includes 19% Chromium and 10% Nickel, providing mechanical properties that match or exceed the base metal, including a tensile strength typically around 580 MPa and elongation of approximately 40%.

Metallurgically, the deposit provides a delta-ferrite content of roughly 3-9% (FN 3-9), which ensures excellent resistance to hot cracking during solidification. The coating formulation is engineered to provide excellent wetting action, resulting in flat to slightly convex bead profiles with fine ripples. This electrode is packaged in a robust 5 kg tube, ensuring moisture protection and long shelf life under proper storage conditions.

FAQ

For a 4.0mm E308L-16 electrode, the recommended amperage range is typically between 110A and 160A, depending on the welding position and base metal thickness.

No, E308L-16 electrodes are designed to run on AC or DC Electrode Positive (DCEP/Reverse Polarity) for the best arc stability and penetration.

It is primarily designed for welding austenitic stainless steels like AISI 304, 304L, 302, and 301. It can also be used for stabilized grades like 321 and 347 for service temperatures below 400°C.

Stainless electrodes can absorb moisture. If the pack has been open or stored in humid conditions, re-drying at 300°C-350°C for 2 hours is recommended to prevent porosity.

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon (0.04% max). This prevents carbide precipitation during welding, protecting the weld area from intergranular corrosion without needing post-weld heat treatment.

Yes, the rutile-based coating ensures the slag is self-releasing in many cases, or easily detachable with light chipping.

It is not recommended. You should use an E316L electrode for 316 stainless to match the molybdenum content and corrosion resistance of the base metal.

This product comes in a 5 kg (approximately 11 lbs) protective tube.
