OVERVIEW

Premium Martensitic Stainless Steel TIG Filler Metal

The Exocor Executive ER410NiMo TIG Welding Rod is a specialized filler metal designed for the high-integrity welding of martensitic stainless steels. Specifically formulated to match the chemistry and mechanical properties of ASTM CA6NM castings, this alloy is widely utilized in the power generation and heavy industrial sectors. Unlike standard 410 stainless steel, the 410NiMo grade incorporates nominal additions of Nickel (4.5%) and Molybdenum (0.5%). These alloying elements fundamentally alter the microstructure, significantly improving the toughness and ductility of the weld deposit while maintaining high strength and corrosion resistance.

This 1/8" (3.2mm) diameter rod is produced to Exocor's exacting "Executive" standards, ensuring a clean surface finish free from contaminants that could introduce porosity or inclusions. It is the preferred choice for fabricating and repairing critical components such as hydro turbine runners, steam turbine diaphragms, valves, and pumps. The rod produces a martensitic microstructure that responds well to heat treatment, although strict adherence to thermal cycles is required to prevent hardening issues.

Technical Application & Heat Treatment

Welding with ER410NiMo requires careful control of thermal conditions to ensure the integrity of the joint. Preheating the base material is typically required to minimize thermal shock and cracking susceptibility. Furthermore, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is essential for this alloy. As noted in the technical specifications, the final PWHT temperature should not exceed 1150°F (620°C). Exceeding this critical temperature range can cause the reformation of untempered martensite upon cooling, which compromises the ductility and toughness gained during the tempering process. When used correctly, Exocor Executive 410NiMo delivers X-ray quality welds with excellent resistance to cavitation and erosion.

FAQ

ER410NiMo is primarily used for welding and repairing ASTM CA6NM castings, as well as components like hydro turbines, valves, and pumps made from similar martensitic stainless steels.

Yes, PWHT is critical for this alloy to relieve stresses and temper the martensitic structure. The temperature should not exceed 1150°F (620°C) to avoid rehardening.

For TIG welding with ER410NiMo, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas to ensure a clean, stable arc and protect the weld pool.

Yes, it is often used for welding 410, 410S, and 405 base metals, offering better toughness than a standard ER410 filler metal.

These rods are 1/8 inch (approximately 3.2mm) in diameter and come in 36-inch lengths.

The addition of Nickel and Molybdenum improves the ductility and toughness of the weld metal, significantly reducing the risk of cracking compared to straight 410 stainless steel.

The Exocor Executive ER410NiMo TIG rods are sold in 10lb protective tubes.

Yes, preheating the base metal is typically required to prevent thermal shock and cracking, given the hardenable nature of the martensitic base material.
