OVERVIEW

Specialized ER320LR TIG Rod for Alloy 20 Fabrication

The Exocor ER320LR TIG Welding Rod is a premium austenitic stainless steel filler metal designed for the most demanding chemical environments. The "LR" designation stands for "Low Residuals," indicating a strictly controlled chemistry that significantly reduces carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur content. This modification is critical when welding fully austenitic stainless steels like Alloy 20 (Carpenter 20Cb-3), which are notoriously susceptible to hot cracking and microfissuring during the welding process. By minimizing these residual elements and adding stabilizing agents like Columbium (Niobium) and Manganese, Exocor ensures a weld deposit that is both mechanically sound and highly resistant to corrosion.

This 3/32" (2.4mm) diameter rod is the industry standard for precision TIG welding in sectors where sulfuric acid is present. It is widely used in the fabrication of storage tanks, piping systems, and mixing equipment within the petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and synthetic rubber industries. The rod produces a weld metal with corrosion resistance comparable to the base metal, specifically in boiling sulfuric acid solutions containing copper sulfate. When your project involves expensive base materials like Alloy 20, using a high-quality filler like Exocor ER320LR is essential to prevent costly weld failures and ensure the longevity of the equipment.

Key Technical Properties

The Exocor ER320LR is engineered to meet AWS A5.9 specifications. The reduction of residual elements not only prevents cracking but also improves the overall toughness of the weld. It is designed to be used with 100% Argon shielding gas on DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity. The 36-inch cut lengths are stamped or flagged for easy identification, ensuring you never mix up your high-alloy consumables in a busy shop environment.

Recommended Applications

  • Chemical Processing: Fabrication of reactors, heat exchangers, and process piping handling sulfuric acid.
  • Metal Pickling: Repair and construction of pickling tanks and racks.
  • Pharmaceuticals: High-purity vessels requiring extreme corrosion resistance.
  • Food & Beverage: Specialized equipment for acidic food processing.

FAQ

The 'LR' stands for Low Residuals. ER320LR has restricted levels of carbon, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur compared to standard ER320. This modification is crucial to prevent hot cracking (microfissuring) which standard 320 is prone to during welding.

It is primarily used for welding Alloy 20 (also known as Carpenter 20 or 20Cb-3) and other similar austenitic stainless steels designed for sulfuric acid resistance.

100% Argon is the standard shielding gas for TIG welding with ER320LR to ensure a clean, oxidation-free weld puddle.

While it might physically join them, it is not recommended. ER320LR is a highly specialized and expensive alloy designed for specific chemical resistance. Using it on standard 304/316 is unnecessary and may not provide the correct mechanical properties for those grades.

Like most stainless steel TIG welding, ER320LR should be welded using DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative).

Alloy 20 is fully austenitic. Without the 'Low Residual' chemistry of the ER320LR rod, the weld metal would be highly sensitive to thermal stress during cooling, leading to immediate cracking.

For 3/32" diameter stainless steel TIG rods, a 10lb tube typically contains approximately 120 to 130 rods, though this varies slightly by exact alloy density.
