Technical Overview of Exocor ER308L TIG Rod

The Exocor ER308L is a premium austenitic stainless steel TIG welding rod designed to meet AWS A5.9 specifications. This filler metal is formulated with a nominal composition of 20% chromium and 10% nickel, making it the standard choice for welding 18-8 stainless steels such as AISI 304, 304L, 308, and 308L. The 'L' designation indicates a controlled low carbon content (maximum 0.03%), which is critical for preventing intergranular corrosion caused by carbide precipitation during the welding process. This feature eliminates the need for post-weld annealing in many applications.

Metallurgically, the ER308L deposit provides excellent toughness and ductility. The balanced ferrite number ensures high resistance to hot cracking while maintaining superior corrosion resistance in oxidizing environments. It is suitable for service temperatures ranging from cryogenic levels up to approximately 350°C (660°F). The rod is manufactured with tight diameter tolerances and a clean surface finish to ensure consistent electrical conductivity and arc stability during Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW).

This consumable is ideal for joining common austenitic stainless steels where the weld metal must match the corrosion resistance of the base metal. It is not recommended for high-carbon 304H applications where creep strength at elevated temperatures is required. Proper storage in a dry environment is recommended to maintain the surface quality and prevent contamination.
