OVERVIEW

Premium Grade ER309L TIG Filler Metal for Demanding Applications

The Exocor Executive ER309L TIG Rod is a high-performance austenitic stainless steel filler metal designed for the most critical welding tasks. Manufactured to meet strict AWS A5.9 specifications, this 2.5mm (3/32") rod is part of Exocor's "Executive" line, which is renowned for its exceptional surface quality and chemical consistency. The ER309L classification indicates a composition similar to standard 309 stainless steel but with a restricted carbon content of 0.03% maximum. This modification is crucial for preventing carbide precipitation during the welding process, thereby maintaining the corrosion resistance of the weldment even in as-welded conditions.

This filler metal is the industry standard for joining dissimilar metals, specifically stainless steel (such as 304 or 316) to carbon or low-alloy steels. The high alloy content of chromium and nickel allows the weld deposit to tolerate dilution from the carbon steel base metal without forming crack-sensitive microstructures. It is also the preferred choice for applying buffer layers or cladding on carbon steel prior to capping with 308L or 316L filler metals. The Exocor Executive ER309L exhibits excellent toughness and ductility, making it suitable for applications involving heat treatment or cryogenic service environments.

Industrial fabricators rely on Exocor Executive products for their cleanliness and feedability. Each rod is processed to ensure a surface free of oxides and lubricants that could contaminate the weld pool, resulting in porosity-free, X-ray quality welds. Whether used in petrochemical piping, power generation components, or general fabrication involving mixed materials, this 10lb tube of ER309L provides the reliability and performance professional welders demand.

FAQ

ER309L is primarily used for welding dissimilar metals, such as joining 300-series stainless steel to carbon or mild steel. It is also used for the first layer of cladding stainless onto carbon steel.

For TIG welding (GTAW) with ER309L, 100% Argon is the standard shielding gas. Helium mixtures can be used for greater penetration in thicker sections.

The 'L' stands for 'Low Carbon'. This indicates that the carbon content is restricted to a maximum of 0.03%, which helps prevent carbide precipitation and intergranular corrosion.

While it can be used, ER308L is the correct and more economical choice for welding 304 to 304. ER309L is specifically designed for dissimilar joints or buffer layers.

Stainless steel TIG welding is typically performed using Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN), also known as straight polarity.

The number of rods varies by diameter. For 3/32" (2.5mm) rods, there are typically around 120-140 rods in a 10lb package, depending on the exact length and density.

ER309L is suitable for heat treatment applications and general service temperatures. However, for continuous high-temperature service (above 700°F/370°C), other alloys might be preferred to avoid sigma phase embrittlement.

Standard TIG cut lengths are typically 36 inches (approx. 914mm) long.
