OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Exocor ER316L TIG Rod

The Exocor Executive ER316L is a premium quality solid TIG welding rod designed to meet AWS A5.9 specifications for the ER316L classification. This filler metal is engineered for joining Type 316 and 316L austenitic stainless steels. The alloy composition includes approximately 18.5% chromium, 12.5% nickel, and a critical addition of 2.0% to 3.0% molybdenum. This molybdenum content significantly enhances the weld metal's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-bearing environments, and improves creep strength at elevated temperatures.

A key feature of the "L" designation is the restricted carbon content, limited to a maximum of 0.03%. This low carbon chemistry is vital for preventing sensitization and intergranular carbide precipitation during the welding process, thereby maintaining corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition without the need for post-weld heat treatment. The rod produces a weld deposit with a ferrite number typically between 8 and 12, ensuring excellent resistance to hot cracking while maintaining ductility.

Exocor ensures a high-quality surface finish on these cut lengths, promoting consistent feeding and arc stability. Each rod is typically stamped or embossed for traceability and quality control. This product is suitable for DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity using 100% Argon shielding gas.

FAQ

The 'L' stands for Low Carbon. ER316L has a maximum carbon content of 0.03%, whereas ER316 allows up to 0.08%. The lower carbon in 316L prevents intergranular corrosion (carbide precipitation) during welding, making it superior for corrosion resistance without post-weld heat treatment.

For TIG welding with ER316L, use 100% Argon. This ensures a stable arc and protects the molten weld pool from atmospheric contamination.

Yes, you can use ER316L to weld 304 stainless steel, and it will provide excellent corrosion resistance. However, ER308L is the standard filler for 304, and using 316L is often considered 'over-alloying' and may be more expensive.

TIG welding with stainless steel filler metals like ER316L is performed using DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative), also known as Straight Polarity.

The typical tensile strength for an ER316L weld deposit is approximately 85,000 PSI (590 MPa), with a yield strength of around 58,000 PSI.

Molybdenum (2.0-3.0%) is added to increase the alloy's resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride-rich environments like saltwater.

Stainless steel TIG rods should be stored in a clean, dry environment at ambient temperature. Keep the tube closed when not in use to prevent dust and shop contaminants from settling on the wire surface.
