OVERVIEW

Technical Specification: Avesta ER316L TIG Filler Metal

The Avesta ER316L is a premium quality TIG welding rod designed specifically for joining austenitic stainless steels of the 17 Cr 12 Ni 2.5 Mo type (AISI 316 and 316L). This consumable is engineered to meet rigorous industrial standards, offering a chemical composition that ensures a weld metal with excellent resistance to general, pitting, and intercrystalline corrosion. The inclusion of Molybdenum (Mo) in the alloy matrix significantly enhances its performance in chloride-containing environments and dilute hot acids, making it the preferred choice for chemical processing, marine applications, and petrochemical infrastructure.

Metallurgically, the Avesta ER316L deposits a weld bead with an austenitic structure containing approximately 5-10% ferrite. This balanced ferrite number (FN) is critical for preventing hot cracking during solidification while maintaining high corrosion resistance. The low carbon content (denoted by the 'L') minimizes the risk of carbide precipitation at the grain boundaries, thereby preserving the corrosion-resistant properties of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) without the need for post-weld heat treatment. This rod is also suitable for welding titanium and niobium stabilized stainless steels, such as ASTM 316Ti and ASTM 316Nb, provided the service temperature does not exceed 400°C. For applications requiring higher temperature service, a niobium-stabilized consumable would be recommended.

The physical characteristics of the rod include a diameter of 2.5mm (closely equivalent to the imperial 3/32") and a standard length of 36 inches. It exhibits a scaling temperature of approximately 850°C in air, providing substantial oxidation resistance at elevated temperatures. This product is supplied in a 4.54 kg (10 lb) tube, ensuring ample material for extensive fabrication tasks. It meets AWS A5.9 classifications for ER316 and ER316L, ensuring compliance with major welding codes and specifications.

FAQ

It is primarily used for welding austenitic stainless steels of the 316 and 316L type, offering high resistance to acid and chloride corrosion.

While it can physically weld 304, it is generally over-alloyed for that purpose. ER308L is the standard filler for 304, but ER316L is acceptable if 308L is unavailable, though it is more expensive.

When welding titanium or niobium stabilized steels like 316Ti or 316Nb, the service temperature should not exceed 400°C.

These rods are 2.5mm in diameter, which is the metric equivalent often used interchangeably with 3/32".

Yes, TIG welding with stainless steel rods like ER316L is typically performed using Direct Current Electrode Negative (DCEN).

The weld metal structure is austenite with approximately 5-10% ferrite, which helps prevent hot cracking.

Yes, the Molybdenum content in ER316L provides excellent resistance to pitting corrosion caused by chlorides found in salt water.

The product comes in a tube weighing 4.54 kg, which is approximately 10 lbs.
