Harris Silvalloy 45T (often referred to as Safety-Silv 45T) is a high-performance, cadmium-free silver brazing alloy formulated to meet AWS BAg-36 specifications. This alloy is composed of 45% Silver, 27% Copper, 25% Zinc, and 3% Tin. The inclusion of tin is a critical differentiator, as it enhances the wetting capabilities of the alloy on ferrous metals, particularly stainless steel, and slightly depresses the melting temperature range compared to standard BAg-5 alloys.
With a solidus of 1195°F (646°C) and a liquidus of 1265°F (685°C), Silvalloy 45T exhibits a plastic range of approximately 70°F. This range allows the operator to manipulate the molten alloy to bridge small gaps that may exist in fit-up, although tight clearances (0.002" to 0.005") are recommended for optimal capillary action and joint strength. The alloy produces high-strength, ductile joints with excellent corrosion resistance.
This product is supplied in a 1 Troy Ounce coil with a 1/16" (1.6mm) diameter, making it suitable for precision work and smaller maintenance tasks. It is an excellent choice for applications where cadmium fumes must be avoided, such as in the food and beverage industry, medical gas piping, and general manufacturing. It requires the use of a flux, typically Stay-Silv White or Black, to dissolve oxides and promote flow.
