The Harris Stay-Silv 15 is a premium phos-copper-silver brazing filler metal designed for high-integrity joints in copper and brass systems. Formulated with a composition of 15% Silver, 5% Phosphorus, and a Copper balance, this alloy meets the AWS A5.8 BCuP-5 classification. It is specifically engineered for applications requiring high ductility and resistance to vibration, making it the preferred choice for HVAC and refrigeration service technicians and fabricators.
One of the defining characteristics of Stay-Silv 15 is its wide melting range (Solidus 1190°F / Liquidus 1480°F). This property allows the alloy to transition slowly from solid to liquid, providing a "plastic" range that is excellent for filling loose connections or bridging gaps where close fit-up cannot be maintained. While it is self-fluxing on copper-to-copper joints due to its phosphorus content, the use of Stay-Silv® white or black flux is required when brazing brass or bronze fittings.
This product is supplied in a protective tube containing 24 rods, each with a diameter of 2.5mm. The 15% silver content significantly lowers the liquidus temperature compared to BCuP-2 or BCuP-3 alloys, improving flow characteristics and reducing the heat input required, which minimizes grain growth in the base metal. Note: This alloy should not be used on ferrous metals or nickel alloys, as the phosphorus can form brittle intermetallic compounds leading to joint failure.
