OVERVIEW

Reliable General Purpose Soldering Alloy

The Handy & Harman 50/50 Tin/Lead Solder is a staple in the industrial and fabrication sectors, offering a time-tested balance of performance and versatility. Composed of 50% Tin and 50% Lead, this alloy is designed for general purpose soldering applications where a specific melting range is advantageous. Unlike eutectic solders that solidify instantly, 50/50 solder possesses a distinct "plastic" or pasty range between its solidus temperature of 361°F (183°C) and its liquidus temperature of 421°F (216°C). This characteristic allows skilled tradespeople to manipulate the solder joint as it cools, making it exceptional for bridging wider gaps or creating smooth, wiped joints often required in sheet metal work.

Versatile Applications

This 1lb spool of 3.2mm (approximately 1/8 inch) wire is substantial enough to handle larger projects without constant feeding, yet precise enough for detailed work. It is widely used in non-potable plumbing applications (such as drainage lines), radiator repair, and stained glass fabrication. The alloy bonds effectively with a variety of base metals including copper, copper alloys (brass and bronze), and mild steel. Its excellent wetting properties ensure a strong, leak-proof bond when used with the appropriate flux.

Quality You Can Trust

Handy & Harman has long been synonymous with high-quality brazing and soldering materials. This product meets rigorous industry standards for purity and composition, ensuring consistent melting behavior and joint strength. Whether you are repairing vintage automotive radiators, fabricating galvanized sheet metal ducting, or assembling artistic glassworks, this 50/50 solder provides the reliability professionals demand.

Safety Note

Warning: This product contains lead. It is illegal and unsafe to use this solder for potable water systems (drinking water pipes). It is intended for industrial, drainage, and fabrication use only. Always ensure adequate ventilation when soldering to avoid inhaling fumes.

FAQ

50/50 solder has a melting range rather than a single point. It starts to melt (solidus) at approximately 361°F (183°C) and becomes fully liquid (liquidus) at 421°F (216°C).

You can use it for drainage and waste lines, but it is strictly prohibited for potable (drinking) water lines due to its lead content.

This is typically a solid wire spool. You will need to apply an appropriate external flux (paste or liquid) suitable for your base metal.

It is effective for joining copper, bronze, brass, mild steel, and galvanized iron. It is not suitable for aluminum or magnesium.

The wire diameter is 3.2mm, which is approximately 1/8 of an inch.

50/50 is generally more economical and has a wider plastic range, making it better for wiping joints or bridging wider gaps. 60/40 flows more easily and solidifies faster, which is often preferred for electronics.

It contains lead, which is toxic. Do not inhale fumes and wash hands thoroughly after handling. Never use on items that contact food or drinking water.

This is a 1lb (pound) spool.
