OVERVIEW

High-Efficiency Metal-Cored Welding Wire

The Cor-Met F45 MC-G is a premium metal-cored welding wire designed to bridge the gap between solid MIG wires and flux-cored wires. Engineered for general fabrication and the joining of carbon and low-alloy steels, this .045-inch diameter wire comes in a 25lb spool, making it ideal for medium-to-heavy industrial applications. Metal-cored wires like the F45 are manufactured with a hollow metal sheath filled with metallic powders, alloys, and arc stabilizers. This construction allows for higher current densities, resulting in significantly faster travel speeds and higher deposition rates compared to standard solid ER70S-6 wires.

One of the primary technical advantages of the Cor-Met F45 is its ability to produce deep penetration profiles while maintaining a smooth, stable arc. The metallic core conducts current more efficiently, preheating the sheath and creating a wider, more fluid weld pool. This ensures excellent sidewall fusion, reducing the risk of cold lap defects in structural applications. Unlike flux-cored wires that leave a heavy slag covering, the F45 MC-G produces minimal islands of slag (silica), which often flake off on their own or require very little post-weld cleaning. This feature makes it highly suitable for multi-pass welding operations where inter-pass cleaning time needs to be minimized.

The "MC-G" designation indicates this wire is designed for use with gas shielding. It typically operates best with high-argon mixtures, such as 75% Argon / 25% CO2 or 90% Argon / 10% CO2. These gas mixtures, combined with the wire's chemistry, reduce spatter levels and fume generation compared to straight CO2 processes. Industrial facilities utilizing robotic automation or mechanized travel systems will find the consistency of the Cor-Met F45 particularly beneficial, as it feeds smoothly and maintains arc center alignment.

Key Industrial Benefits:

  • Increased Productivity: Higher deposition rates allow for faster project completion.
  • Clean Welds: Minimal spatter and slag reduce finishing labor costs.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of mild steel applications, including structural beams, heavy machinery, and tank fabrication.

FAQ

This metal-cored wire is designed for use with mixed gases, typically 75% Argon / 25% CO2 or 90% Argon / 10% CO2, to achieve optimal arc stability and minimal spatter.

The Cor-Met F45 MC-G is a metal-cored wire. It has a hollow metal sheath filled with metallic powders but does not contain the fluxing agents found in flux-cored wires, resulting in minimal slag.

Like most metal-cored and solid MIG wires, this wire should be run on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP), also known as Reverse Polarity.

Metal-cored wires like the F45 are primarily designed for flat and horizontal positions due to their fluid puddle. Vertical up welding is difficult without a pulsed MIG power source.

Generally, no. Metal-cored wires produce very little slag (mostly small silica islands), allowing for multi-pass welding without extensive inter-pass cleaning.

Metal-cored wires offer higher deposition rates, faster travel speeds, better sidewall fusion, and the ability to bridge gaps better than solid wires.

Knurled drive rolls (V-Knurled or U-Groove depending on tension) are recommended for tubular wires to prevent crushing the wire while ensuring positive feeding.
