OVERVIEW

Economical Copper Brazing Alloy

The Harris 0 (Model 0520R) is a phos-copper brazing alloy designed for cost-effective joining of copper-to-copper connections. Formulated with 7.1% phosphorus and the balance copper, this alloy meets AWS BCuP-2 classifications. It is widely utilized in the HVAC and plumbing industries for its ability to flow quickly and penetrate tight clearances. This 25lb package offers substantial volume for industrial fabrication and large-scale installation projects.

Technical Characteristics

Harris 0 is characterized by its liquidus temperature of 1475°F (802°C) and solidus of 1310°F (710°C). The phosphorus content acts as a fluxing agent when brazing copper, eliminating the need for external flux in copper-to-copper applications. However, when joining brass or bronze, a proper brazing flux (such as Stay-Silv white or black flux) is required. This alloy is extremely fluid at brazing temperature, making it ideal for joints with clearances between 0.002" and 0.007".

Application Limitations

While highly effective for copper, Harris 0 should not be used on ferrous metals (steel, iron) or nickel alloys containing more than 10% nickel, as the phosphorus can form brittle intermetallic compounds that compromise joint integrity. Additionally, it is not recommended for use in high-sulfur environments which can accelerate corrosion.

Usage Recommendations

For optimal results, heat the base metal broadly and evenly. Once the joint area reaches the proper temperature, introduce the rod; the alloy should flow rapidly via capillary action. Avoid overheating the rod directly. This 3/32" diameter rod provides a good balance of deposition rate and heat control for medium-sized tubing and fittings.

FAQ

You do not need flux when brazing copper to copper. However, if you are brazing copper to brass or bronze, a silver brazing flux (like Stay-Silv) is required.

No. Phosphorus-bearing alloys like Harris 0 should never be used on ferrous metals (steel, iron) or nickel alloys, as they form brittle phosphides that will cause the joint to fail.

Harris 0 has a solidus temperature of 1310°F (710°C) and a liquidus temperature of 1475°F (802°C).

Harris 0 contains 0% silver and is very fluid, ideal for tight gaps. Harris 15 contains 15% silver, which provides more ductility, better gap-filling capability, and is better suited for joints subject to vibration.

This rod is classified as AWS A5.8 BCuP-2.

Yes, Harris 0 is generally suitable for copper plumbing systems, but always check local codes. It is cadmium-free.

The exact count varies by diameter, but a 25lb box of 3/32" x 20" rods contains a substantial quantity, typically several hundred rods, intended for high-volume use.
