OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Hobart Hardalloy 118

The Hobart Hardalloy 118 is a premium hardfacing stick electrode designed specifically for the build-up and joining of austenitic manganese steels. Engineered with a special austenitic manganese steel alloy composition, this electrode is formulated to withstand severe impact conditions found in heavy industrial environments. The weld deposits produced are extremely tough and possess the unique ability to work harden rapidly under stress, making them ideal for components subjected to constant pounding and shock loading.

Technically, the Hardalloy 118 offers impressive mechanical properties, boasting a tensile strength of 127,000 psi and a yield strength of 78,000 psi. It is capable of single and multiple pass applications and operates effectively on both Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) and Alternating Current (AC). The amperage range for the 1/8-inch diameter variant is optimized between 85 and 175 A, allowing for versatility across different material thicknesses and joint configurations. While primarily designed for manganese steels, it also serves as an excellent intermediate layer or base for harder, more abrasion-resistant carbide alloys like Hardalloy 140 and 155.

This electrode is particularly suited for the mining, railroad, and construction industries. Common applications include the repair and resurfacing of crusher jaws and cones, gyratory crusher mantles, hammer mill hammers, and manganese bucket teeth. It is also effective for joining austenitic manganese steel to itself or to carbon steels, as well as for welding Type 309 stainless steels and other dissimilar metals. The deposit is porosity-free and crack-resistant, ensuring structural integrity in critical machinery components.
