OVERVIEW

Industrial Grade Manganese Build-Up Electrode

The Hobart Hardalloy® 118 is a premium 5/32-inch (4.0 mm) stick electrode specifically engineered for the heavy industrial sector, particularly within mining, construction, and railroad maintenance operations. This electrode deposits a work-hardening austenitic manganese steel alloy that is designed to withstand severe impact and heavy shock loading. Unlike standard mild steel electrodes, the Hardalloy 118 deposit remains tough and ductile, rapidly hardening on the surface when subjected to impact, which prevents cracking and spalling under extreme stress.

Ideally suited for the build-up and joining of austenitic manganese steels, this consumable is a critical component in the repair and refurbishment of crushing and earthmoving equipment. It exhibits a high tensile strength of 127,000 psi and a yield strength of 78,000 psi, ensuring structural integrity in repaired parts. The weld deposit is porosity-free and serves as an excellent cushioning base for harder, more abrasion-resistant carbide alloys such as Hardalloy 140 or 155. This layering technique extends the service life of components by combining a tough, impact-resistant core with a wear-resistant surface.

Packaged in a 10 lb hermetically sealed can, these electrodes are protected from moisture absorption, ensuring consistent performance right out of the container. The Hardalloy 118 operates effectively on both DCEP and AC currents, providing flexibility for various power sources found in the field. With an amperage range of 140 to 250 A, it offers deep penetration and fusion. The slag system is designed for easy removal, reducing post-weld cleanup time and improving overall productivity in maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO) workflows.

FAQ

It is designed for the build-up and joining of austenitic manganese steels, particularly in high-impact environments like crushing and mining.

Yes, the deposit is a work-hardening alloy, meaning it becomes harder and more wear-resistant as it is subjected to impact during service.

Hardalloy 118 operates on both Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) and Alternating Current (AC).

Absolutely. It provides a magnificent, tough base for more abrasion-resistant carbide alloys like Hardalloy 140 and 155.

The weld metal has a tensile strength of approximately 127,000 psi.

It is primarily designed for austenitic manganese steels. While it can join dissimilar metals in specific contexts, its main purpose is manganese steel fabrication and repair.

The recommended operating range is 140 to 250 Amps.

It comes in a 10 lb (4.5 kg) hermetically sealed can to ensure moisture protection and electrode freshness.
