OVERVIEW

Technical Overview: Hobart Vertiwear 600

The Hobart Vertiwear 600 is a premium gas-shielded, flux-cored wire designed specifically for the surfacing of mild and low alloy steel components. Engineered with a small diameter of 1/16 inch (1.6mm), this wire offers exceptional control and versatility, allowing operators to perform hardfacing operations in all positions, including vertical and overhead. This capability is particularly advantageous when resurfacing large, immovable machinery where component rotation is not feasible.

Metallurgically, the Vertiwear 600 deposits a martensitic steel alloy. This microstructure provides a robust balance between resistance to metal-to-metal wear and moderate impact resistance. Unlike many hardfacing wires that are limited to one or two layers due to cracking risks, the Vertiwear 600 is formulated to allow for a buildup of up to eight layers. This multi-layer capability makes it an excellent choice for restoring dimension to severely worn parts before applying a final capping layer, or for use as the final wear-resistant surface itself.

The wire operates on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP) and is compatible with both 100% CO2 and 75% Argon / 25% CO2 shielding gas mixtures. The use of mixed gas typically promotes a smoother arc transfer and reduced spatter, which is beneficial for out-of-position work. The slag system is designed for easy removal, reducing post-weld cleanup time. With a typical hardness range of 50-55 HRC, the deposit offers significant protection against abrasion while retaining enough toughness to withstand medium impacts found in heavy industrial environments.

FAQ

Hobart Vertiwear 600 can be used with either 100% CO2 or a mixture of 75% Argon and 25% CO2. Mixed gas generally provides a smoother arc.

You can apply a single layer or build up to a maximum of 8 layers, which is excellent for restoring dimension to worn parts.

The weld deposit typically ranges between 50 and 55 HRC (Rockwell C), providing good abrasion resistance.

Yes, Vertiwear 600 is an all-position wire, allowing for flat, horizontal, vertical, and overhead welding.

The deposit is generally considered non-machinable due to its high hardness and must be finished by grinding.

This wire is designed to run on Direct Current Electrode Positive (DCEP).

This specific product is 1/16 inch (approximately 1.6mm) in diameter.

Like all flux-cored wires, it should be stored in a dry, low-humidity environment to prevent moisture pickup which can cause porosity.
