OVERVIEW

Technical Overview of Lincoln Electric ER630 GTAW Rod

The Lincoln Electric ER630 is a premium stainless steel TIG welding rod designed specifically for joining materials of similar chemical composition, most notably 17-4 PH (Precipitation Hardening) and 17-7 PH stainless steels. This filler metal is classified under AWS A5.9 as ER630. It is a copper-bearing chromium-nickel stainless steel consumable that is engineered to provide weld deposits capable of responding to post-weld heat treatment (PWHT). This characteristic allows the weld metal to match the high tensile strength and hardness properties of the precipitation-hardening base material.

In its as-welded condition, the microstructure is primarily martensitic, providing moderate hardness and strength. However, to achieve the full mechanical potential—often exceeding 150,000 PSI tensile strength—the weldment typically undergoes a solution annealing and aging process. This makes the ER630 an essential consumable for critical applications in industries such as aerospace, petrochemical, and power generation where component integrity under high stress is paramount.

The manufacturing process of these rods ensures tight control over trace elements, resulting in a stable arc and excellent fluidity during the GTAW process. The rod is designed for use with 100% Argon shielding gas on DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) polarity. It is supplied in a 10 lb tube, ensuring material cleanliness and ease of storage in industrial environments.

FAQ

ER630 is primarily used for TIG welding 17-4 and 17-7 precipitation-hardening stainless steels.

Yes, to achieve mechanical properties similar to the base metal (such as high tensile strength), post-weld heat treatment is typically required.

100% Argon is the recommended shielding gas for GTAW (TIG) welding with ER630.

DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative) is the standard polarity for TIG welding stainless steel.

While it can physically weld it, it is not recommended. ER630 is specialized for precipitation-hardening steels; using it on 304 is unnecessary and may lead to cracking or mismatched properties.

This product comes in a 10 lb tube.

The AWS classification for this rod is ER630.
